Wobble and grinding.
Hello everyone,
I am slowly recovering my GPvR from the terrible mechanical shambles in which I bought it.
My issue is the at front passengers side.
I've replaced the front wheel bearings, outer CV joints, strut tops, brake disks and tires (95% brand new). The wheel bearings got rid of the some of the road noise I was hearing, the CV joints took care of the clicking on turns, the tires had separated tread and were causing vibrations so replacing fixed that and the disks got rid of the slight warp in the original ones.
But, there is a wobble at speed. I feel it through the steering wheel, and as of last week there is a grinding noise coming from the front passengers side. It's in the same spot every rotation.
It's a 5spd LSD tip and has 158,000km on it. It hasn't been rebuilt as far as I'm aware.
My questions are; How would I differentiate between the inner CV joint bearings or the diff bearing on that side without pulling the driveshaft out? Would there be a difference in sound between the two?

Re: Wobble and grinding.
Are the front wheels balanced? Maybe a balance weight has fallen off.

Re: Wobble and grinding.
Bob Janes aligned and balanced them all 2 months ago, so I'm going to assume the balance is fine. Even if it was off it wouldn't explain the grinding noise.Supplanter wrote:Are the front wheels balanced? Maybe a balance weight has fallen off.

Check to make sure that a rock hasnt been lodged behind the hub cover. You also may find a rock in the caliper.

I'll have a look tomorrow but I suspect something more sinister. A rock would be good newsdstocks wrote:Check to make sure that a rock hasnt been lodged behind the hub cover. You also may find a rock in the caliper.

No, had the wheels on and off numerous times. Always made sure there's no gaps and all is tight and secure.PHIL069 wrote:Loose wheel nut/s?

Ahh!Shhtuart wrote:It's a 5spd LSD tip

More seriously.
Is the wheel warped?
Hit any big pot holes, etc...
If the inside of the wheel is not a perfect circle you will get that effect you describe also, add that to the possible list.
You mention you replaced disks, what about pads.
Can you see any visual wear on the new disks that is distinct apart from a smooth surface?

Yeah pads were replaced too. EBC redstuffs all round. They are slotted rotors and are not cracked or warped. I'll need to pull the driveshaft out I think to get a definite answer.Astron_Boy wrote:Ahh!Shhtuart wrote:It's a 5spd LSD tip

Re: Wobble and grinding.
With the GPR's they came with an optional leprechaun in the hub to hold the wheel in case the wheel nuts come off or the stud fails. You might not have noticed him before as he never leaves the car unless its to feed on your socks at night while their in the dryer.
If your pumping some good hard rock it might be him head banging and hitting the rotor, or he might just be kicking it to cause mischief. Id pull the wheel off and have a chat to him, see if he knows anything!
