Mah engine oil is leaking and it isn't the gasket thats its leaking from. It appears somehow leaking from the engine itself. I brought it in the garage to see what they can do, the bloke just told me to wait until my car reaches 100,000kms (thats like another 40,000 kms to go) and he'll fix up everything. He told me not to worry about it... But i am, as i am a worry wart. Im just wondering if any other fto's (1995 gpx) are having the same problem and what did you do rectify it??

Sound to me like the camseals are leaking. I had this problem when I got the car, but got it fixed for nothing under the dealer warranty .

It is apparently nothing to worry about, but like yourself, I was not happy that it was doing it. Also, if it came time to register the car, it may get knocked back because of it. It depends on how anal the guy checking it is.

I would question the how authentic the 60k is on your car, as I wouldn't expect the seals to leak so soon. But the leaking may be related more to age than km's.

The cost, if you do it now, would be around the 1000 to 1500 mark I would expect. Very time consuming job. If you could wait until the major service, it is little extra cost (as that costs a packet anyhow).

Thanks MRX, i'll do it the next time i'm due for a major service. On top of that how would u go about checkin that the kmz hasn't been tampered with???

No way of knowing for sure. But look at things like wear on the seats, wear on the carpet (especially around the pedals) and just a general feel of the condition of the car (eg rattles etc). It depends on what cars you have owned or spent some time in before, but you just get a feel for whether a car has been driven for more than what it says.

When we were looking for our FTO (not long ago), we went from the one we bought (84k km's) to one with a "genuine" 50k, and the difference was huge. The carpets were worn, it was full of rattles and the steering wheel was quite well "used".

But, if you are happy with your car (except the leaks, of course) then that is all that matters. Best of luck and enjoy!

all FTO's leak oil... the cars are starting to get a bit old... its no big drama as long as its not pissing out (i.e you don't need to top up the oil between services)...

I've never had an oil leak, but the number of times I've had battery acid leaks . . . *grrrr*

My engine was leaking big time before, and most mechanic thought it was the head gasket, until when the repairer actually opened up the engine....
phew lucky it was just the engine seals thats worn.

so the cost is around $1000 to get it fixed.


now my car does not leak at all. 70K KM and drives like new

hey does anyone know how much it cost to fix the head gasket or rocket cover or wateva???

unique have done a few now... it is normally best to do it as part of a major serivce (if you are getting close to 100k say anything over 85k and its really worth doing).

depends on what is wrong but anywhere between 1000-1500 to fix it is in the ballpark (and have the top of your engine cleaned and put back together properly)...

my FTO has done 150000kms and isnt leaking! Nothing has been changed either, all still original equipment.

thats what i reckon! Ive always used a 10W40-40 never an oil leak. I suspect its the buys using the thin 0-5W30-40 stuff.

same i replace me battery more often then i should.

You know MADFTO, vibration is a big killer in batteries, and my FTO is so stiff no wonder i always have to change the battery.

heat kills mine... i'm moving mine to my boot shortly (as soon as i have a spare 1/2 day)... sick and tired of battery acid in my engine bay... it gets all over you and your itchy for days.

Sweet!! Oh well's its going to take me a long time to service it nows, cos i only drive the car during the weekends and i take my lancer to work weekdays =(

Man, if you hate battery acid, you're not going to like it in the boot . . .

I'd suspect that the rear end of the car would pull more Gs than the front would . . . =)

i had oil leaking out of my rocker cover gaskets for ages...ever since i had the car...

i changed my rocker cover gaskets and my cam seals and i dont have the problem anymore. I dont even think i needed to change the rocker cover gaskets...just put a bit of sealant on and it wouldve been fine i reckon...

how much did it cost u to replace the rocket cover gasket chiangster???

i bought them from northshore mitsu for $54 each and replaced them myself

so... about $110 for parts and a couple of hours work

true but i won't have a battery getting excessively hot and pissing out battery acid when i'm on the race track....
