Smoke from starter motor

Post by Daniel2019 »

Does it mean that the starter itself is fucked or does it mean that the wiring is fucked? Will be replacing it regardless when the new one comes from dwayne but just thought I'd ask just so I know what to look for.

Electrical components don't work too well without their smoke.

Well.....Your starter motor let all it's smoke out and now doesn't work, so just get more smoke put in it

Also theres a bunch of oil and grease and sh*t all around it. Would it be OK to degrease the f**k out of it and then try and turn it over or should I just wait until I take it out to clean it up then put the new one in?

You can "degrease the f**k out of it" anyway so you have a cleaner part to remove.

There is no use in trying to start it again, you have already let the smoke out. ;)

It starts when tapped a few times with a hammer while the key is being turned.

Not for much longer I reckon. If your solonoid fuses itself together it will get extremely hot, pump out the rest of it's smoke and drain your battery as quick as my FTO is on a dyno
How long till you get a replacement with all it's smoke still inside?

Could the solenoid fusing together be the result of that rocker cover leak from before with oil falling onto the starter motor or just age/use?

just age + use, they don't last forever. And the solonoid is sealed so the oil couldn't have entered inside.

That was what I was asking

Didnt know if oil could have reached the solenoid or not. Not that it really matters because the leak has been fixed, was more just for my own learning and curiosity.

Doesn't matter if you have a leak or not, oil will always drip onto the starter when changing your oil filter.

Don't worry Daniel, you turned 18 didn't you? Go to Coles, pick up a pack of 20's. Marlboro Reds have good smoke quality with extra turbons in them which install micro turbo nano cells into your starter motor. Keep smoking the ciggys and blow the smoke inside the starter motor....remember to block the hole out with a finger the whole time to make sure the smoke doesn't come out again. Then put some tape/gluetac and parcel it to Phil's to get it replaced with his starter motor :thumleft:
