Port Polish

Post by jez001 »

Has anyone performed a port polish on their FTO? I have a GPX manual, and im trying to think ways to improve the performance, without the need of a turbo (sounds *~delightful!~* i know, but my insurance company wouldnt like me much if i had one!). Is it an extensive exercise, and expensive? Cheers.

Mine is ported & polish, but it was done in Japan. I've got a friend who done the same thing for his FTO in Vic, & it cost him $800 all up.

Well I'm assuming this is talking about port and polishing your heads. Which makes the head more efficient and makes air pass in and out of the head in larger amounts, and flows better. I would think that at least an aftermarket chip would be required to make best use of such a mod. It's the sort of thing that I would look at after doing exhaust, intake first. Then maybe enlarged throttle body, bigger intake manifold, uprated cams, etc. Thats not say that I would fit all these parts to an FTO as I'm not suer just what sort of gains you'd get, but I would think you'd get a few extra kilowatts out of a port and polish, don't think I'd know any exact sort of increase you'd get though, it's more about improving the efficiency of the system I think.

Good question, i guess is like taking a car to do the same service at different mechanic, some charge a forturne, while others charge a more resonable price. People always try to justify the price with the claim like quality of work they have done, so just double check the work people had done to your car, or get few quote before hand.

Heres few option,

1. CAI kits from UAS.

2. Down pipe from UAS, or the extrator from RPW.

3. Catback exhaust.

4. Aftermarket re-programable computer like Unichip.

5. EVERYONE'S FAVORITE -------NOS

Don't forget to upgrade your brakes, theres no point to go faster if you can't stop.

Poting and polishing your heads is a grat idea if your after some extra HP. To justify the diference in price is not the quality of the porting work as most of it is done by milling machines etc. but it's the rebuilding costs. i.e. new k-liners, valve guides, springs, valve seat milling etc. You can port and polish a head yourself, but is it flow bench tested?. I've had mine done for a very good price in Victoria, i've pulled the heads off myself and have rebuilt the engine groud up, so i've saved a hep of money with labour costs. Yes, you'll nee a computer to get the full benefit of a proper porting job. But it's not necessary, you WILL feel a big improvement! Nothing in the way of 30-40% but around 15% increase in power is a fair call if done right! That also includes exhaust TB and Intake manifold work. As for me, i have built myself a 2.5" Mandrel bend system, with mandrel bent front primaries, ported heads, halteck ecu, fuel pump, 64mm bored Throttle body new gaskets everywhere! And my baby just purrs like an animal! And after all this i've dragged an r34 gts-t from the lights and too around 80km/h i'm dead even after 100 it's bye bye fto as the turbo taks over, which is the next move!

Makes you think of what a turbo can do and how funny it is to see there face when they can't beat a N/A fto to 80km/h, which in my mind is when a drag stops............having lost my licence it just has to! :(

If you need some info of where to go in vic or any questions answered ask away.

Cheers
