Steps to remove head deck

Post by YYgirl »

Hi, I have seen the head deck removed once about 2 years ago, now I have forgotten! Can anyone tell me the simple steps to get to the head deck so I can plug an amp and sub woofer in? thanks!

ok, put the car on a level surface, slip it into Neuteral.
Now you should be able to pull up on the back of the surround like this:

If you can't grab it, gently use a kitchen knife or similar to prise it up (gently is the word here)
The surround will come up, and as it clears the shift gate pull it gently backwards and slightly down so that the tabs pop out from under the aircon ecu screen, you may get a snag or two, as the ashtray has a few lines running from it, but you'll get there, then when it's clear, just hang it over into the passenger footwell and you'll see two screws holding you head unit in (hopefully) unscrew these being careful not to drop the screws into the console interior:

You can see the shiny screw heads above the head unit.
Sorry for the crap pics, but it's all I had handy.

Hey Dash, is that a JVC KDLH-2000 mp3 unit I see there? If it is, then good choice - I've got one too :D
The detachable face got stolen 3 months after I bought it. Set me back another $260.

By the way, I want to do a similar job on my centre console, only in blue. Did you have a problem with your paint job cracking? Have you left it out in 40 degree scorching summer weather?

Well spotted rxboy, yes it's that very deck.
No problem with the paint, good preparation means you'll have no worries.
I washed the plastics in a type of prepsol solution to get rid of all the gunk, then slow coats of paint, building gradually, then let the parts dry for a few days so the paint gets strong.
$260 for the face?
Crikeys, the deck only cost me double that when they first came out, hope no one knocks mine off!

P.S I'm toying with the idea of putting my modded xbox in the car, found a nice 7 inch widescreen at Jaycar, then I'll have 120 gig of mp3s and maybe I'll even put a movie or 6 on it ;)

LOL It'll be the ultimate entertainment machine. Hope u'll be concentrating more on the road than on the XBOX
I've got a small Panasonic TV in my car, but it's Japanese and only catches SBS at the moment (was great during the world cup). Might call VDO to see how much a conversion costs.

PS: If you don't garage your car overnight, then NEVER assume that your car is safe close to home. My detachable face was stolen at about 1:00 am right outside my house. Window cost more to replace then the face.
