Non directional tyres

Post by barfy »

Are these tyres suituble for an FTO ? Im getting Falken Zeix 326 on a 18x7.5 rim with 225/18/40.

The actual sizes and measurements dont worry me its just the non directional tyre tread my not beable to grip as good. Im getting these tyres with new 18' rims from Tempe Tyres. They advised me that this kind of tyre would be perfect for rotational purposes and also is a good soft compound tyre which will handle with grip ....

Any thoughts ?

they are the tyres i got sent to me...apart from the small scape that you should look out for with the 40's I find the grip on these tyres pretty good on dty and in the wet too!! it pissed down with rain the first day i had my wheels on and they were really good!!

I'll post up a pic of where it scapes, but just when you have the wheel off, knock it back a bit with a rubber mallet and there will be heaps of room for full lock with only small rubbing.

But yeah, good tyre, what price did they quote you for the tyre?

i wanted 35's the same as you ordered by they rang back and said 40's would be the better option. So i guess that would explain why u go 40's aswell 21mrk.

Not sure on the quote for the tyres but i got 18'' vault savannah's for $2300 delivered. considering the rims are $400 the tyres work out to be about $175 i guess ? Thinking about it it costs $85 to deliver so it sounds like ive got a wicked deal ! :)

When u look at your tyres & if u c the pattern going toward one way, thats directional.

You can also tell its directional by the arrow pointing one way on the size wall as well.

Quite simply, normal tyres have a tread pattern which can work in either direction, but to achieve this the performance of the tyre is compromised. Directional tyres have a tread which has been optimised but which only works effectively in one direction. Most directional tyres have a fairly severe "V" shaped pattern to them.

As for them saying the 40 profile will be better than the 35, I'm betting this is what they had in stock or is what they can get for a cheaper price. A 35 will be a slightly harsher ride, but only minimally, but it would be a more stable tyre (less side-wall flex / roll) and would keep your speedo more accuarate.

i tried the falken ziex tyres before and on the stock wheels they do not grib well at all, with tyres you get what you pay for and i picked up those falkens for 130 each and they really show it.
as for directionals and non directionals, directionals do grip better in the dry, but in the wet non directions grib better under breaking and accelerating, because they disperse the water much better then directionals and therfore do no aqua plan as easy.
the other bonus with non directionals is you can rotate them on to any wheel, evening tread life.
I just put some new non directional dunlops on my car, i used to be a fan of the dunlop fm901 directionals and except they didnt last long enough. now dunlop have a much bigger performance range, and i got their non directional tyre used on the xr6t and xr8s, and i got them for around 230 each, and they are the best value for money i have come across. i cannot rate tread life because i havent had htem long, but they grip much better i nthe wet to the older dunlop fm901 series, and they are nearly as good in the dry, i highly recomend the extra dosh for them over the falkens even if its only on the front
