lack of power, jittery acceleration?

Post by InitialG »

hey guys,

i have a 96 GPX manual and have been having a prob for a while now.. i've had my mechanic look at it but we were still unable to find the source of the problem. (perhaps i need to find an FTO expert in Syd)

anyway here are the main points about what i'm experiencing:

there's the usual tappet problem, need to get them adjusted. acceleration is not smooth, seems to dip and surge a bit sometimes but appears to be ok at certain levels of pedal "depression?" (couldn't think of a better word). engine is responsive and good power for the first 15-20 mins or so of driving but after that time, the power drops off, dips and surges are more noticeable and exhaust note is deeper. she still revs but there is a definite lack of power/torque.

[edit] forgot to mention, she's also running rich.. i used to be able to get up 500kms per tank.. now maybe 420km or so if i am lucky.

have already changed spark plugs, coils, leads and both engine temp sensors. i don't want to just keep changing sh*t and find out the problem is still there. so i am hoping that someone might recognise the symptoms i have and know what the problem is.

thanks in advance and merry christmas to you all out there! :)

I'd start by checking the error codes: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=14667

I'd also recommend swapping out the 02 sensor.
