I think the other thing you should be concerned about it how much it's going to cost. There have definitely been threads on this before which have discussed what would be involved.

as a matter of interest, aside from the physical swap-over, does anyone know if there are any other issues with doing this?

e.g.
- do you need an engineers certificate due to it being such a large change
- does it need to be inspected by the road authority given that the status of the car has changed from auto to manual
- any possible insurance issues
- anything else?

well Ruchi in response to yr questions, my friend did a manual conversion on his twin turbo 300zx last year. From what i recall he didnt need a engineering certificate as there are obviously manual 300zx's around, he didnt need to get it inspected by any road authority, but im not too sure about insurance. Do insurance companies usually ask whether its auto or manual? if they dont then it shouldnt be an issue.

my 3 cents :D

interesting... I'm a little surprised by that, as I thought you needed an engineering certificate for any "significant" modification / change to the engine / running gear.

Did he inform VIC Roads of the change in transmission of the vehicle, as they will still have it listed as an auto? In theory a police officier could canary the car if its specifications aren't the same as what VIC Roads have on record.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has done this what their insurance company said, as they do record the type of transmission, and in a similar manner to the above paragraph, if the details of the car don't match what they have on record they have a way out if you ever claim.

well he did sell the car just recently, i'll ask him about it. he would know either way because his done a lot of modifications to different cars that his owned.
I highly doubt though a police officer can tell whether u have changed from an auto to a manual. The chances of that is like 0.001%.

that would be great, let us know how you go.

re: police officer, I agree, but as we all know it's more of an attitude thing with police than anything else. Rub them up the wrong way and you're virtually inviting them to inspect your vehicle and look for the smallest thing, especially if you get a TOG car.

The need for an Engineering certificate is only necessary for modifications that, if not fabricated by a quality machinist, could hinder the structural integrity of the vehicle.

Engineering certificates are not need for a simple swapping of a gearbox as it uses the same chassis mounting points the auto box uses.

As for insurance, the only reason they may ask which trans your running is all in the dollar figure. As we all know manual fto's are harder to find hence more expensive to fix if in an accident.

police don't know anything! I've just completed a garrett gt42 upgrade on an r34 gts-t pulling just over 450hp atw. During a test run we where puuled over for a random check. After the male police officer had searched through the engine compartment, he replied, ahh sorry mate, it all looks standard, but that intercooler is making too much noise ===Canary! :(

So from this, a manual conversion is something i've been looking at. you can do it yourself, it is a BIG job hence the price tag to fit it. Any quality mechanic can do it, the major part of the conversion is the fitment of the peddle box. The tranny is a simply plug and chug. Although i've had my head and arms inside my fto for the past 8 months, this all seems easy for me. The fto is wonderfully engineering engine, and the NA mods that i've done thus far have helped it by 35%.

Speak to kempy's, last time i checked they had a conversion package for $2k ready to ship.
