The cost really depends on what's actually happened to the gearbox. It cost $2500 to recondition my 5spd, half of which was covered by warranty. But I'm in Melb.

It's a 5spd auto. I'm not exactly sure what happened. I was told that it practically fell apart.

How did u blow it?

Something doesn't sound right there because the tip box shouldn't let you change down if the revs would be too high. How many kms has your car done?

From what I've heard, most people have spent $2000-2500 to recondition their tip box. Putting a manual gearbox in is probably not worth it (there are other posts which explain why this is so). Not sure about going up to a 5 speed tip box.

Strange, the gearbox shouldn't have let u down change if the revs were to high, sure u didnt blow the engine ? 8O

i didnt blow the engine
coz i can still start the car and stuff
and engine sounds fine
if i blow my engine i cant start engine right?
it just sounds weird when i put into gears i can hear the reving sound PLUS a weird sqeeky noise
so yea i done think i killed the engine

take it to any automatic transmission specialist, they should be able to sort it out coz i think it's the same gearbox used by VRX Lancers/MRs.... (unless it's a 5-spd, which i think it's shared with the Magna, not 100% sure on that)

You must have been in 3rd as you cannot downshift from 2nd to 1st when you're doing 100.

The FTO has all sorts of protection to help you avoid doing dumb things to your car, such as variable rev limiters and a down shift restrictor. When you change gears using the tip lever you are not physically changing gears, rather you engage a switch which sends a signal to the car requesting that it changes the gear. Before it does so, however, it will check to make sure the revs aren't too high or low etc. and only then will it change.

The gear box must of been on its way out or something else has happened and it just coincided or was triggered by the downshift, but it was not caused by the downshift as you cannot change into first when doing 100.

OK so you can change gears... can you actually drive the car? Are there any other issues or is it just the "weird sqeeky noise"?

How does it sound when the car is in neutral, both idling and reving?

You won't know the cost in fixing it until the mechanic opens you box to find the problem.

If you are going to change to the 5 speed tip then besides the 5 tip you would need the wiring for it and ecu. In the end its not worth it.

that sucks man...

you'll need to have a mechanic work out what's wrong before a price can be quoted to fix it...

do you have a mechanic? or are you now searching for one?

Check out the article about getting engine ECU error codes out of the FTO. That apparently also works for the tip box - the 'N' light flashes its own distinct error code.

Check it out -

http://www.ftowa.com/html/workshop/workshopart07.html

...and report back the code from the transmission.

Of course, if it whines, grinds and goes nowhere then the code is probably immaterial!!
