Transmission fault

Post by andux »

Hi all, love the forum and have only joined a week ago as I have just recently become an FTO owner after years and years of admiring. Just wanted to ask a quick question and see if anyone can help me. Today my auto transmission started playing a few games. The Neutral light on the dash started to flash and the car was stuck in 3rd gear (when manually shifting I could only select 2nd or 3rd gear also). I stopped the car, turned it off and restarted and the problem disappeared. Would this be as simple a problem as a computer malfunction or is it something more serious? I have booked in to have the transmission serviced as looking at the service records it hasn't been done for a while. Has anyone else experienced this problem. Any comments would be much appreciated. Kindest Regards, Andux.

Welcome to the forums mate.

Because I've got the workshop manual handy, and I thought it was a good thing to find out, here's what the the manual says (in summary) about the Neutral light flashing:

1. If the N range lamp is flashing at a frequency of 1 Hz (approx) then check following:
Input or Output shaft speed sensor; Each solenoid valve; Out of phase at each shift point; and A/T control relay system.

2. If the N range lamp is flashing at a frequency of 2 Hz (approx), it means that the auto transmission fluid temperature is too high.

Hope this helps.

Welcome andux, a few people have had this problem, if you do a search you be able to read what they discovered and how they fixed it.

Hi andux,
I had the same problem turned out the transmission oil was just way overdue for replacment. Did the service myself with castrol dextron 3 from super cheap and a filter which I can post the part number for (its in the garage). Do it yourself, I have no mechanical experence and it took me about 20 mins. Really easy and my flashing light is long gone. cost about $60.

I can email instructions or just look yourself for instructions on the forums....
