Need help with replacing cv dust cover for 'spider' bearing

Post by brent88 »

Hey brought a new driveshaft boot cover because my old 1 is split in half on the transmission side drivers side and and cant see how the new 1 will go on unless i take out the other end(wheel) and hope its a splined shaft at that end. Image
does the spider assembely come off?

actually looking at it now it looks like i take off the peice in the middle labled 8,9,8

when i looked at the rubber peice in the middle of the shaft it looked like it was just some balancing weight or protector because i could only see to clips holding on a bit of rubber but looking at it now i have to take that part off yeah?

it comes off and no need to remove from g/box. Do need a really good set of circlip pilers though as this is what holds them on messy and fiddly but simple enough

This ^

Need to pull the shaft our from the wheel end, then it will just slide out from g/box end if the boot is busted. Then as Tim mentions, you need a good set of circlip plyers to remove the other end.

nah i have got no problem getting the boot oiff i have done that i just didnt wanna have to take the castle nut off if i dont have to( wont i still not be able to slip the new boot on due to the large peice around the spline peice of the shaft?

can i just take it apart in the middle?

 The shaft doesn't come apart in the middle.

You have to take the whole shaft out, undo castle nut, remove front hub from the bottom end of the strut etc. Then remove the inner workings of the joint with circlip plyers. Its a messy and sh*tty job. Be prepared to get covered in old CV grease.

all done, woulda been a lot easier if i had the right tools to begin with. tryed to get the circlip on the trans end off while shaft was still connected but that wasnt happening so i beought a 32mm socket for $12 then i got home and broke a 1/2" drive ratchet so i went and brought a secondhand sturdy 1/2" breaker bar cut off the end of a jack handle so it would fit over the breaker bar and proceded to take the castle nut off, after all that f**king around all went smoothly,

dopnt know y those bolts are always so fkn tight im pretty sure if you overtighten them its bad for your bearing...nevertheless i tightned it up with just the breaker bar not with the jack handle aswell. o yeah and i just removed the circlip on the transmission end once it was out and took off the spider bearing assembly.
