Engine Bay Light Fuse Keeps blowing (fuse 14)

Post by Jezza »

Hey guys,

I went away for a few days, and upon returning home, my battery was completely dead. I gave it a jump start and all was well. The next evening I went to go for a drive but noticed my lights weren't on at all. As in no parkers, no head lights, no beams, front and rear. (blinkers still work fine). Checked interior fuse box - all good, checked engine bay fuse box and number 14 was blown. Put a replacement 40amp fuse in there, went to turn on the headlights, and the damn thing blew again!

Any ideas guys? Is there a relay that controls the lights as well that could be dodgy? Should I just try a 80amp fuse instead?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Under no circumstances must you replace the fuse with an 80A one, you could start a fire.
LED ALL the things.

i had this same problem with mine when i got the car back after the engine swap, but i found out the dickhead installers drilled through the loom that runs across the frame on the front between the 2 head lights. they did this while installing the intercooler lol stupid dickheads. so maybe something is wrong with your wiring

oh those idiots!

Cool cool, thanks for the heads up. Time to start trouble shooting the wiring, will start with the globes them selves, one of them might be shorting out everything. Gotta go down and get myself some more fuses first though lol.

Cheers guys

Hey guys,

Sorry to bring up an old thread from a few weeks ago, but i'm still having issues.

I pulled all globes out (headlight, fogs, parkers, blinkers, all, front and back) and placed the 40amp fuse in the headlight position in the engine bay fuse box. All good, no blowing of fuse, then added each globe individual and turned lights on each time. Again all good, thought the problem was solved, turn the engine, fuse blew again! and again...

I have looked at all the wiring as much as I can, does not seem to be any shorts anywhere, although a significant part of it is covered by the plastic shealth stuff with a whole pile of others of wires, so can't really check in their to easily.

I then read that if i wire up a headlight across the headlight fuse holder points, it will glow when ever there is a short, and allows you to jiggle around the wires to try and find the dodgy one. I did this, and my globe is on sometimes when the engine is on, and sometimes even when the engine is off. Indicating a problem! Again I cannot find a single wire that is responsible.

I then removed each of the relays in the engine bay fuse box, but not seem to cut power supply to the globe I was using to troubleshoot the fuse with.

So, firstly, where is the headlight relay? Is it next to the internal fuses - there seems to be 3 relays there, but not sure what they do, and cant find a simple relay diagram anywhere.

Secondly, anyone got any ideas? I would think its a short but cannot honestly find it, therefore am thinking it might be a relay possibly. I've heard the relay sitting behind the fog light button has a tendency to stuff up, but would this cause my headlight fuse to blow, even when the foglights are off?

Sorry about the epic essay, and so many questions, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am actually out on rural placement at the moment and am no where near any auto electrician, that and the whole $90 an hour charge and me being a very unpaid student!

Thanks guys

i have the same problem man but 1 side of my fuse reads posative and 1 reads negative when tested with multimeter so i think theres a short somewhere but i cant find it. i might be able to run my own wires but then i think ill bypass the relay which i cant find. anyt other suggestions? i might rip apart all that tape shite thats on it
