Stripped spline or broken diff??

Post by Shane001 »

I'm not going to get time to look at this until July but figured I might put this out there and see if anyone reckons they know what's wrong. Maybe we can start a poll lol!

So, coming out of turn 9 at Eastern Creek on the weekend I went to change up into third and all of a sudden had no drive to the wheels. After rolling to a stop at the side of the track, I attempted to select a gear, and was able to change into all gears no problem but still no drive. Interestingly I noticed in my incar video last night that as I was doing this the speedo was moving as if I was getting drive...

Anyway so we put the car up on stands tonight and the front left wheel / driveshaft is basically free wheeling in the gearbox, but it's not making any clunking noises or anything, just spinning free. The right is still OK though and we started the car and changed through all gears and the front right was spinning up accordingly, but nothing in the front left.

So we think either the spline on the drive shaft axle in the gearbox has stripped, or something in the diff has failed, but again there's no unusual noises coming from anywhere.

The diff is supposed to be a Cusco 1.5 way, and it does (or at least it did lol) lock under acceleration, but I would have thought if it was a stripped spline with a 1.5 way LSD I should still have drive to the other wheel? When on the ground I had no drive at either wheel.

Anyone come across this problem before or have an idea of what it would be? I figure first thing to do will be to remove the left driveshaft and have a look, but won't have time to do this for a month or so.

Hope not, it's supposed to be a Cusco...

If it's the diff a spool will be going in 8)

Anyone know where you can get a full spool for an FTO GPX?
