FTO Issues
Hey guys, just looked at an FTO (95 GPX, Stock, Black) today. Two of the main issues I came away with were:
1. Roof rust
2. Torn CV Boot
Just wondering if anyone else has faced the same problems, and what the approximate costs would be. I'm guessing the roof rust would be ~1k (correct me if I'm wrong), but what about the CV boot? I don't know how long it's been like that, would an axle replacement be the correct measure?
Thanks.

The roof rust is common in the fto's from 94-97, Mitsubishi used a glue in the roof which held moisture (fuckd if we know why) and thats what causes that, so yes its preety common fault.
I just got mine removed, had 3 quotes, $1500, $1200 & $800 - Naturally I went for the $800 one. If you plan to go through with getting it fixed make sure that you get it done properly, like get it fully cut out and plated properly.

Not to sure on the Torn CV Boot.
Goodluck on the buy mate,
Cya around.

Re: FTO Issues
$20 bucks for the actual boot and depending on which one (inner or outer) would cost no more that $50-$60 labour to swap.

Re: FTO Issues
Thanks for the info guys.
@Kustom: I did read your log, saw how you got the plates cut out, so I do know what you're talking about. Looked new, I might go around and get a few quotes first.
@I8A4RE: What if there is damage to the joint due to the leaked grease? Any tips on associated costs? Thanks.

Oh I didn't notice you are in Brisbane - if you can't find a cheaper quote than $800 - Which will be hard to find because its a fairly big job, then I can give you the number / name of the place I got mine done if you wishThatGuy wrote:Thanks for the info guys.

Re: FTO Issues
CV joints are pretty hardy.
Also depends on what joint it is.
If its the inner joint, the signs of wear are a groaning noise at high speed (aka 100kms)
If its the outer joint, you'll get a clicking noise when doing a 3 point turn or u-turn etc.
If you have none of those symptoms, just prelace the boot. As mentioned, the boots are about $20 come in 'kits' with straps & grease.
Any auto sho can supply them, they are the same as a HJ Galant.
If you're in Syd, I'd do it for a case of beer

Re: FTO Issues
Glue in the roof?? Is it noticeable? I have no rust on my roof or anywhere. Also I have a sunroof which I guess is stopping the rust!

lining and chisel the glue out as it will be a rock hard substance.Roof rust is prone to happen to other mitsus too.

Mine is a 1995. Does the rust start from under the roof and rust through?

Re: FTO Issues
Moisture. The metal support that runs from either side of the car sweats with the roof and glue just speeds the whole process up.

Re: FTO Issues
So they run from front back back of the off on either side on the dint on the roof that from the windscreen to the rear window?
My FTO does not have that dint.
