Hey guya,
Took my fto gpx into mitsubishi to get the tappets re-adjusted. Anyway the tappets in my fto are fairly noisy and so i took to them and they confirmed by listening to it that my tappets needed doing. $350 later they tell me that the tappets are fine and nothing needed to adjusting. So i got charged the cash and i am still left with noisy tappets. I tried to tell them that it the tappets, which the noise is coming from.
They tried to tell me that it was something else but had no explantion to what it could be.
I am going to call them tommorow to take the car back and do it again. What do you guys think i should do about it. I am not happy at all. a lot of cash for no end result.
thanks for any help,
scotty

Re: Tappets problem
why did you pay them for doing nothing?
#1 - go get your money back
#2 - if they won't give it to you, then make them do the job you paid them for
#3 - don't leave til you're happy with the work done (suggest picking up first thing in the morning so you can hear that the tappets are okay at cold start .. surprise them at 7-7:30am after the car's ready for pickup so they don't try pulling another swift one & warming the car up before you get there

Re: Tappets problem
gpx - 12 adjustable , 12 hydraulics lifters.
if it's gr, ask them to replace all 24 hydraulic lifters.
i got my gpx adjusted and now still left a tiny bit of tappet noise, previously was ticking loud as hell.
so, mine could be the clearance still not adjusted perfectly or, could be any of the 12 lifters need replacing.
oil is not the cause of the tappets noise,
ppl use thick oil just to reduce their tappet noise (it's not a fix, but as a temporary solution untill u get it fixed.)
if the tappets are ok, there won't be any noise at all no matter how thin the oil is.

Re: Tappets problem
Hey guys,
called mitsubishi today and the car goes back in next wednesday for another look. They are still convinced that the tappets are fine and don't need adjusting.
They are loud as i can't believe that they think they don't need adjusting.
cheers,
scotty

Re: Tappets problem
hehe, it all makes sense now .. Mitsubishi don't know jack about FTO's .. if they're tapping, they'd either be worn or need adjusting.. there is no way by just looking at them that they'd know they're properly aligned, they'd need to measure the alignments properly with a feeler gauge & if they had done that then they may as well have adjusted them at the same time to make sure ..
ask them how they know that they don't need to be adjusted..
buuuut ... i'd just get your money back - it's Mitsi, not like your local mechanic, better chance of getting it refunded ..

remove manifold like this

Cover it with a thick cardboard for nothing to drop there , not even dust!
Use cleaning procedure and you'll be ok for years
