tappets

Post by Raven »

my car has been sounding like crap for the last couple of months, and i only very recently learned what the prob was, untill then i had absolutly no idea what tappets were, i thought it was a frayed fan belt or something.

anyway, can anyone tell me a good place to get this fixed in brissie and how much am i looking at paying to get them tightend or changed or what ever it is to make the damn clicking stop!

thanks, Tom

If its your belts and your like me and cant afford to have them changed. Just give em a real quick spray with WD40 and she should quite down a bit.

As for tappets this has been covered a few times before so probably best to have a look in the forum.

Mine is quite noisy at the moment as well and am wanting to rip out my engine and clean the damn little things completely...as people have already mentioned that once yo do this it'll be quite for a long time!!!

Is your car GR or GPX? Cause if it's GPX like mine then you will have to get your tappets adjusted once you clean them.

Either way hope to find some time to do this....appreantly it should only take you few hours and beats paying some one else to do it for about $500 easy!

:) Good luck!

After tackling the tappet problem in my car, i'll never pay a mechanic 500 bucks to replace them. Its so damn simple it just takes a while.

All thats required is rocker cover removal, push vavles down, remove rocker arm and remove tappet.

The only bitch sometimes, is when you have a cam lobe in the way, or the screw driver i was using to push down the valves kept slipping off it.

Is there some tool available? I have a friend at mitsu he said that the have a vice type item to do this.

Just remember to cover all areas where a rocker arm could fall into, as if if falls into your engine somewhere, it would be a bitch to get out.

Like my car, all tappet noise was eliminated by just cleaning the front banks of lifters. So just do the front, drive around for a while if the noise is gone, dont worry about the back.

Good way of determining this is to Get under the hood early in the morning and try to determine if any of the noise if coming from the front or back of engine. Screwdriver to the ear helps.

honestly i did the lifter clean on the 2nd of march, my tappets where so bad i refused to drive it. When engine is warm it use to tap loud! Whenever i get to a set of lights, it use to tap, only if i was above 2-3k lifter noise would go, sometimes even at 60km/h tappet noise would be there. I can confidently say my lifters where the worst in any car ive heard. its been two months and lifter noise is very minimal! I only get lifter noise sometimes during a cold day, overnight start. Dissapears after a while and never do i get it anymore during warmup.

The duration of lifter noise seems to be longer than it use to be after the clean, but this could be caused by colder weather, older oil.

Im trying to find a suitable replacment to magnatec, because lifter noise is gone, i can give magnatec the boot. I heard castrol products are bad period. Bad oil pressure etc.

Anyone recommend me a oil? Im thinking on the lines of Motul/Shell.

Ok. Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is a "lifter noise"? I may have been comvered before, but I didn't actually own the car before...
