Replacing Cam seals?

Post by Astron_Boy »

Note there is no DIY on it.
Curious on how much of a s*** it is?

I realise things like remove manifold and rocker covers and all that.
But re the actual seals themselves.
I'm curious on how one would go about it?
I'm hoping its as easy as I think.

Anyone?

A bitch of a job

1.Remove intake manifold
2. remove harmonic balance
3. remove all belts and timing covers
4.remove timing belt
5.remove rocker covers
6.will have to put spanner on flat of cams to enable you to remove cam-gears
7. replace seal, may as well do all other seals (crank, half moon) tensioners and waterpump while at it and timing belt
8. put all back together making sure timing is correct etc

so really simple really apart from the fact of a whole 10cm to work with

Basicall that is how it is done so in short its not easy and unless you are confident and have a whole day (maybe more if you havent done it before) set aside, wouldnt recommend doing it yourself

Do the bodge. Degrease the areas, pack in the gasket goo.

I suppose that would do as a good temporary fix.
For the bonfire trip I'm taking 5L of oil to top the thing up. :P

my mech can do it, but I really should just do the work myself as I'm losing so much money to him.
Think there's a list in the NSW section of compotent people to work on FTOs.
Otherwise the mech will ring Mitsu and you'll be up for a triple by pass when you sight the bill.

Excuse my mechanical ignorance...

What does this entail? Just applying the "gasket goo" to the external areas of the engine where you see the oil leaking from?

Also, what's the actual name for above said item and where would I get it?

My leak is getting worse and I can't afford thousands of dollars to have my engine pulled apart...

its called gasket goo  and yes that is exactly what he means just put over where leaks are. But in saying that will have to be fixed at some stage and depends where leaks are from
