GPX Engine Code

Post by mrx »

Ok, so I know that this question was asked before, but what is the actual engine code off the GPX? It was not actually resolved last time, and having put pen to paper, I would like to be 100% sure of what we are getting. Don't want to get a GR passed off as a GPX (all due respect to GR owners).

The number I got was 6A12AQ...

Not 6A12G as some were suggesting it should be. Just want to be sure. Please help rest my mind at ease!

I'm not sure which topics you've read, but here's the info you're after.

1) In all of Mitsubishi's official literature, such as their brochures and technical manuals, both the standard and MIVEC engines are listed as being 6A12. Their is no differentiation or mention of the letter "G" for the MIVEC motor.
2) The "G" in 6A12G does not corrolate to the way Mitsubishi do their engine numbering. As best we can tell this is a made up engine code that someone (not Mitsubishi) have created using the "G" either from the Model code listed in point 4 or from the sound you make when the MIVEC kicks in "Geeee!" :D
3) It is not the engine number that determines whether the car has a MIVEC engine, it is the Model number of the car that tells you this information
4) Look at the 7th & 8th digit of the Model number placard in the engine bay (starts with DE3A), if the 7th one is a "G" it is a "GPX" and if the 8th one is "H" then it has a MIVEC engine.
5) The MIVEC engines have the word MIVEC on the cam cover
6) The MIVEC engines have the oil cap on the drivers side the standard engine has it on the passengers side
7) With a MIVEC engine, you will both feel and hear the MIVEC cams kick in at around 5,500rpm

Hope this helps and clarifies any doubts you had.
MIVEC is My Friend :D
