Drive shaft issues

Post by Tippin »

so ...

today i was adjusting my coilovers as i recently put on a new front bar and it was a bit too low for my driveway... i did everything as i normally would have

after i put everything back on, i turn the car on and immediately i hear a constant knocking noise, i knew it had to be the driveshaft, when i put the clutch in though the knocking stopped. In a moment of stupidness i still wanted to see if the car would get out of the driveway okay, i backed out till about half way down my driveway (heard a few crunching noises along the way) then i needed to straighten the car up a bit so i put it in gear to go forward but nothing, there was no drive at all and it just rolled back more. Heard a lot more crunching and then this shot out from under the car ... inner boot?

so now as it is,

1) the car does not drive
2) no more knocking as i guess the shaft has come loose
3) when i put the clutch in i can still see the driveshaft spinning
4) the car does not stall either when i put it in gear
5) i can get out of the driveway easily :D

looking back at it, im guessing the reason for it all was that i didnt support the hub well enough when dropping it out. It may have been putting too much pressure down on the tie rod.

Unfortunately my knowledge on the gearbox and driveshaft system is pretty basic, what do you guys reckon will need to be replaced?

thanks

Its the CV boot They are all that connects the drive shaft to the CV joint together so must of come completely seperated. Easy fix either its just a new boot or CV can do yourself easy enough but messy job

problem is the car is out on the road now and my street is kind of busy so i cant really do any work on it there...

will have to get it towed to a mechanic which is fine as long as i know that it is a cheap an easy fix so the mechanic cant rip me on costs ...

Oh, you... just had the driveshaft supporting the entire lower suspension assembly? OMG it amazes me when something like this is let happen. I hope I misunderstand what actually happened, but it sounds like you dismantled the strut assembly to from the lower arms etc and just let them hang there 8O

Yeah you didn't get the inner joint back into place properly before re-assmbling.

Just wrote a how to get one out here:

Changing the boot there is a bit more to thou. You need a good set of circlip plyers to get the bearing assembly off the shaft, before you can slide a new boot on...
