Recently took my car to pretty much the only mechanic in town to try and fix this.. first time he has ever looked at an FTO.... um anyway he isn't too sure on how to solve the problem. he suggests asking you guys considering there are many of you out there with more knowledge than him or me on the car.

watch this video and listen for what im on about.

100 and 55 percent sure it's the stepper motor... just search these forums for "stepper motor" and you will have your answers. It's been done to death around here :)

what does it idle at normally when warm? but should be around there from very cold stat up and stepper will cause the revs to 'hunt' or maybe stall when idling

where is kingston? maybe its a road trip to come check it out for me :D

when its all warmed up it sits on 700rpm, hit the throttle and she peaks up like it did at the end of vid.

Kingston. way in the South East, 30 mins from Robe if you know where that is.

or if you have ever heard of Larry the big Lobster, thats where you will find Kingston. ;)

Definitely not stepper. It's working fine, seems you need to just reduce your idle via the idle screw.

nah tried that. it kinda starts coughing no matter what adjustments i make to that... still does it. the next day from when my mechanic looked at mine he had a commonwhore come in doing the same thing and ripped one off another one and it fixed it.

my mechanic is currently getting one in to see if that fixes it. will see what happens. all i can do is wait. haha....

So when you adjust the idle to say 1500 rpms when cold it starts coughing? In what way?

Could also be your throttle cable is too tight? Tried loosening it a bit?

If your stepper was screwed you won't get the high rpm when cold, it would just go to warm idle speed straight away.

when i first noticed the problem it was doing 3000 on startup then going to 1500 when warm. adjusted it as much as i could without it coughing. what i mean by the coughing is the idle will drop out then come back in and be like a rabbit on drugs. throttle cable is all okay played with that a bit.

Engine is not meant to cough. Even if a faulty stepper it should not cough whatever that means! Even at very low idle an engine still idles.

So how long to drive to kingston from adelaide? maybe a small road trip :D Is it only when cold it does this or is it at normal temps too? But could be the TPS not correct either (little black thing on TB with 2x srews either side) you can loosen these and adjust it also

We need to hear this coughing. There's got to be a reason why the rpm is so high.

The throttle cable when adjusted is what I consider pretty lose. So if you adjust it to what you believe it tight would make rpms as high as they are.

Kingston is about 3 hours from Adelaide. bit more than a small road trip but not too far. :P

at normal temps it doesn't really cough but but when i hit the throttle it will peak it idle again and slowishly move back to normal again.

ive tryed everything with the screws. my mechanic ordered in a new stepper. see what happens...
