GPX Alternator Issues

Post by silverGPX »

Okay guys,
was trying to get the car into error reporting mode in an attempt to program some wireless keys for my central locking. (only got standard keys when bought car). But i believe i have earthed out the wrong connector, (pin 9, yellow wire).

Now my alternator isnt charging, battery light is on, wont hit mivec, interior mirror light doesnt work, headunit wont turn on, climate control keeps resetting back to default 25degrees and there is no key beep. i have checked every single fuse and all are okay. engine bay and underdash.

Also i have put a fully charged battery in with new terminals and the alternator was working fine yesterday (i keep my eye on the voltmeter)

Is there a relay or something or other that im missing that controls these?
Or have i screwed the computer/s?

someone please help.

P.S the gauges went all funny before the original battery died like going up and down (speedo and tacho) when the indicators were on.

Update:

Fixed all lost power to accessories, however alternator still not charging and not hitting mivec and battery light is on constantly.

So im gonna rip the alternator out, anyone local South East Queensland got a working GPX alternator they would like to sell lol?

This happened to me to and my head lights didn't work. This caused the battery light to come on man check your fuses in the engine bay box check all of them that is what was wrong for my car.

does anyone know where the "solenoid fuse" is? Could that be the problem?

Got a wiring manual? If so, check out the underbonnet fuse box.

And for the problem it was a dodgy fuse, i was testing all the resistances instead of voltages.

As for the gauges going up and down that was related to my battery slowly dying due to it not charging. But its weird for just your map lights not to work as the key buzzer, door trim lights and climate control memory are all connected to the interior light fuse.

Maybe something has shorted out in your maplight. or blown bulb or something.

Anyone know anywhere thats good to get alternators rebuilt? in QLD
or a better question has a GPX alternator got the same parts as another mitsubishi alternator? because the brushes might be okay and all i would need is a regulator pack.

Actually i think more likely when i earthed the wrong pin i must of stuffed something up in the ECU as apparently i have read in a few posts that it regulates the alternators supply. Would anyone have a spare ecu i could use to test this theory before i go ripping out the alternator? or one i could use from their car that hasnt been modded?

Update:

got the alternator out, god that was a pain in the arse, i had a total of 3 jacks one propping the engine up for more room, one holding the car up and one holding the axel up.

Just waiting till tommorow to see where i can get it reconditioned.

QFE!

NEVER rely on jacks to hold a car up. If it slips it is instant crushage to you my friend. A life is worth more than saving ~$40 for a cheap set of axle stands at k-mart or summin

thats okay garth ha.

Well guys i actually do have axel stands, however my dad stole them for his boat trailer. I never just use jacks if im going under the car i was only pulling from the side wheel arch lol. But thankyou for your concern.

Will be testing the alternator tonight to see if the diode has gone, if thats the problem should be an easier fix.

But still it could just be the ECU. Would i be able to test your ecu in my car garth?

update:

tested diode and checked the brushes and they are fine.

Ordering new Voltage Regulator which is Ashford Ingram Part No: 831467 for $110 (repco) as i cannot check that.

Also thought i might get a new alternator relay which is Part No MD113566 but they want $96 from Mitsubishi 8O. Does anyone know if you can get these aftermarket?

Update:

Well ive replaced the voltage regulator and replaced the relay. Still doesnt charge. The only thing it could be is the ECU. So im up for a new ecu.

Its not your ecu..... its still your alternator. Replacing voltage reg is only thing that can cause your alt. not to charge. If your bushes are fucked you alt will also not charge

Oh I dunno... On a GPX the ECU does most of the voltage regulation...

The diodes and brushes were fine in the alternator.

It would have to be the ecu as i shorted out the wrong pin while the car was just on acc and sparks flew. All the problems started when i shorted out the pin and that connects directly to the ecu so i cant think of anything else.

All the wiring is fine, relay is fine, alternator is fine.

I have an ecu you could borrow if you wanted to test it. But I dont know when I am going to be able to get it out
