Post by mz_madz »

SOMEONE DOES IT FOR ME!

I was the victim of credit card fraud & they managed to also wipe my savings (4k worth) all the way from canada ..

Looks like I am going to have to wait another 6 weeks before I can buy the paints to respray my car ..

:(

Yeah, they called me at 8am saying that my credit card was maxed ..

Then at about 12 I remembered that my savings account was linked .. went to withdraw my money & they got to it before me .. :(

Im with ANZ with a chip in my credit card & everything .. they said that it was done through eftpos ..

Just sucks! My brother is a spray painter so I was getting the FTO sprayed a white/blue pearl but its going to have to wait .. better late than never!

Its been forever since I have seen you Aza! How was your Christmas & New Year?

Wow... That sucks...

Considering all the ads that ANZ put on about their security, this is a big surprise... If the charges were O/S then I guess they didn't steal your physical card.... So they must have cloaned it.. Then to get your PIN and savings... Double wow..

I would be asking ANZ some serious questions on how such a secure product was beaten. And be demanding instant reimbursement as it was there internal inadequacies that screwed you up..

I have spent about 12 years in financial services, and spent a lot of time working with Amex before moving on to the banks... 1 thing I can say about Amex when it comes to handling fraud, is they are the best... They give you instant credit refund while they investigate the file... And will be searching through CC footage of the places where the charges were done...

If the merchant didn't do any of there specific checks, then they have to wear the charges.. If they were in the right, then Amex cops it sweet... But the main thing is, you are not out of pocket at all...

Watch your ANZ card to make sure u don't pay interest on the charges while they investigate...
I just had to add it ......

Sorry to hear about this, its all too commonly occuring :(

But you should be receiving reimbursement, as long as you weren't "at fault" then they will cover the loss ie. if they can prove that it was your negligence that allowed the fraud to take place then they can leave you high and dry. We know this is not the case and after they figure this out they'll take care of it I'd imagine.

Im so sorry to hear that is total BS

Can you give some more insight into how you think it may have happened???

You say it happened through eftpos, well without your physical card and pin how is that even possible?

Long story short ... This is possible ...

Lets say you go to a merchant that has a card skimmer ... You pay your bill (most likely restaurants as they take your card where you can't see it) ... They skim it, and it retains all information from the chip ...

They can then (depending on how advanced they are) put that information onto a blank card, or go over the magnetic stripe with the new information ...

Another good place for this to happen is in cabs... They can fit a skimmer between the seat and the centre console, and swipe when you are not looking ...

If they don't put the information onto another piece of plastic, they retain the details and use it on-line and start to wipe you out that way ...

You can buy card skimmers in some Asian countries with no problems at all .. You can get it through their version of Dick Smith ... Totally legal to buy ...
I just had to add it ......

More than you would think actually, following on what craig said, here are some even more COMMON ways they can skim your card and pin.

I found this article linked on my banks website a while back:

Nine news just had a big thing on about this. All big banks have been hit, but a good thing they have 6 ppl behind bars already.
Best way not to get done by this when you use your card hit credit and sign for it this way they don't get your pin number.

You hit the nail on the head there...

That's why when I set up my account, the credit card/debit card is linked to an account with a small balance.. Then my pay and savings go into an account that can only be accessed by internet..

And I only log on at work behind our firewall and secure connection...
I just had to add it ......

On the same note, if anyone lives in the west pennant hills area, do not use the redicard ATM on coonara ave near woolies because it has been known to be used for card skimming.....along with being blown up 6 months ago.
