Transmission Issues

Post by topao »

My car just broke down :( It's the first time in the 5 years i've had her

Anyway the story is i was driving along at 80 when the car lost gear, it just sits in neutral. I pulled over turned the car off and restarted but it still just sits in neutral, i can change the gears on the gearbox and i can see them changing on the dash but it doesnt actually go into gear. Everytime i try to accelerate there's a loud whining noise coming from the engine bay. NRMA said it was the pump in the transmission pumping the fluid through. Anybody got any ideas as to what may be wrong within the transmission???

Mech says it may be the gear shaft, but like anything he can't say for sure without pulling it apart... Which will cost up to 5k

around 2.5k to swap in a second hand box, the full refurb could have cost up to 5k and since it's only a 4sp tip box i figured it's not really worth it as i can put in a manual box for that much and end up having more fun

i don't exactly trust the mechanic but i didn't really have a choice as i need the car back asap and the fto expert was off holidaying overseas

What shaft mate? The symptoms you describe sound more like torque convertor failure to me.

If it will sit in tip mode and go into 1st, 2nd and reverse, still without drive unfortunately, then I would have put it down as TC failure, which over here is a hundred bucks to replace and three hours to fit.

you can try the manual gearbox. Adelaide auto spares had some a few weeks ago. I emailed them regarding price and they said 1500 plus 180 freight. Come with gearbox, pedals, selector etc..all you need to do the conversion. If youre gonna spend 2.5k go the manual.

i should have gone down that path but it's to late as i already said yes to swapping the box a week ago when the site was down

Pisser, it just goes to show though how valuable the support and access to forums such as this one and the FTOOC one in the UK really are.
