Can anyone tell me what the kw output is for a 95 GPX with a modified air filter (ie box removed and cone shaped filter). I have seen 160kws on an other web site. Is this right?? I know a 3ltr V6 Commodore puts out around 165-170kws and someone I know with a turbo Impreza with modified exhause puts out 167 - 170kws. I've told him that the only reason his car beats mine is because of the turbo and my car is heavier. please tell me I'm right!!!
i suspect 95 GPX with pod filter will at best give you only 150kw at the flywheel and running on at least 98RON fuel (considering std output is 147kw).
160kw with pod filter alone is a bit suss if you ask me... maybe with exhaust and ecu mods...
i dunno much about commodores but if a WRX with a modified exhaust can pump 167-170kw, then that's about right (assuming that it's a 155kw MY97 with std boost, intercooler and air filter). Otherwise, unless there are other things he's not telling you, it could be 170kw at the wheels!
btw, wrxs are only just slightly heavier than FTOs, and they're faster because they're turbo'd (hence more torque) and also they have 4wd grip therefore they launch much better than FWDs...
Bit off the subject and not about FTO's... but the current VY Commodore has for the 3.8L engine: 152 Kw power and 305Nm Torque. Interesting enough the 3.5L Magna has a smaller engine but more power and torque at: 155 Kw power and 316 Nm
But it doesn't really compair to the FTO's Mivec engine producing 147/150 Kw power and 200 Nm torque for a car that weights just over a Tonne!!
the reason why it has more torque is simply because it has an extra 1.8l capacity. more cubes (capacity) means more torque, but not necessarily more power...
so although the MIVEC is only a few kw off from the VY, the commie will absolutely blow the doors off the FTO in a rolling start or when going uphill simply due to its torque...
classic example is the Bathurst 24hr - the 7.0l Monaro just kept pulling away in a straightline, even when matched against Ferarri's / Vipers with better power-weight and gear ratios.
* oversized pistons for slight increase in acapcity
* change the cam profiles for more power in the low-range
* custom-tuned exhaust manifold design
* tuned inlet runner lengths
* increase compression ratio
* head-porting/polishing
* custom ECU
Heehehehehe that sounds more like the RPW options list! heheehe well i did think about doing some of them
Anyway the car already done the head-porting/polishing (came from jap like that, so i don't know who did it) & ECU as well, so only few 2 go!! All i need 2 do after all the mod is to go & by a petrol station! ahahahaah
seriously, i can't be bothered wasting my time on NA mods coz no matter what you do or how much you spend on it, it can never be as 'fun' as a turbo... so if any of you interested in buying my 40,000kms MIVEC motor to play, feel free to drop me a line so I can get my 6A13 transplant underway!
Hmmm i might think about your engine once RPW had finish the 6A13 Mivec, cause i need 2 send an engine up, meanwhile i can still play with mine. But I did mention before i sold my S14 silvia 4 this FTO, & i had Supra TT 6pd, Soarer TT & 300ZX TT before as well! So why would i go back 2 turbo??? I brought FTO cause its a N/A, looks good & not your average Honda Type R (or should i say Type S) & i want 2 keep it that way!
If i want a hardcore turbo car, i would of brought one 2wks ago. My friend just imported a full mod Tribe (Jap workshop) Supra. It should run around 500hp if not 600hp, & i can have it cheap!
Well everyone point of view is different & i appreciate everyone input.
I must admit, what dannyboy did 2 his FTO makes me want 2 put a 6A13 turbo 2, & is not the first time i though of it 2! If anyone remember Scarcy Turbo FTO, that was the first time i've seen turbo FTO on the Road, & he distroy everyone on the rd the day we went on the cruze.
But then i have 2 remind myself why i brought a FTO, i want a N/A car 2 play with, just like ppl have the N/A AE86 (not the mock up aussie Sprinter), take it to the max without force induction.
been thinking about a MIVEC turbo myself (can get it done for $7K) but for the same money i could have the 6A13 transplant with more potential and for just that little bit extra, i could also have a 4g63 Evo motor conversion (again, even greater potential)..
...but somehow i always remind myself - is it really worthwhile to go through all that trouble and sweat and put up with torque steer???
i've always been in love with the FTO's shape so the last thing i want is to swap to a different car!
hmmm... anybody got a Evo or VR4 rear-end to donate???
i love the the look of the FTO, it has good power but the mivec motor cant scare you, I have driven the turbo cars as well and untill you do some serious modes to any of them, they dont have the scare factor.
I took my baby for a short drive tonight and it will only go to 12 Lb boost and only ran 258.5 HP at the front wheels on the dyno but its got the scare factor now, plenty of torque steer and wheel spin at the same time, and when the power kicks in feels like it wants to tear the car apart, It still needs to be fine tuned and a power run to be done yet, but i am starting to think it might have a little bit to much power for a front wheel drive car.
I will keep you guys updated, this should be fun as long as i dont wipe out.
i am really starting to wonder what it will be like with 18 Lb of boost or more
Somebody on here was also talking about supercharging their FTO...haven't heard anything more about this since then. I'm interested to see if he went ahead with it or not, and what the results were.

yeah i remember that too, but i can't remember who it was... anyways i also recall reading from another forum (again, can't remember which ) that a supercharger setup would put too much strain on the motor and driveline, which is why a turbo setup is much preferred.
I believe the guys @ RPW have also abandoned their supercharged 6A12G project in favour of the twinturbo job (from a VR4 manifold copy).
