UNICHIP

Post by jetlee »

Hey guys

I am considering a UNICHIP for my 95 gpx, with pod filter only
currently i have 96kw atw and i am not considering an exhaust
What do they cost + fitting
I'd hope to get about 8-10kw at the wheels, does that sound reasonable
Can anyone recomend one, or even another type of performance chip
Cheers

i would go for a programable CPU that can be retuned as you make modifications to the car. a UNICHIP whilst it will give you some benefits is a "one size fits all" solution and no two cars are the same.

microtech computers are my recommendation

Steve i think you getting "PowerChip" & UniChip" mix up, PowerChip is one size fits all, & UniChip is re-programable one.

8-10kw would be a bit optimistic. You should able to get around 3-4kw on the wheel with the current mod you got at the moment.

You can pick up a second hand one under $500 these days, make sure its Type A (compatible to Mitsubishi setting) & the serial isn't old, cause the newer the serial number the better is the chip/model, you can check the serial by calling Air Power Systems.

i have been quoted anywhere from $1500 to $2200 for a Microtech LT8 (supplied, fitted and tuned) how much gains to expect will depend on the overall condition of the engine and what other mods are done to it... but yeah, 10kw at the wheels with just ECU mods alone (on an NA car like the FTO) is a little optimistic... i'm not saying it's not doable, but i am yet to see a single ECU mod that gives you that much extra gain in HP. Good luck nevertheless! :D

Those apexi safc. can they be considered a reprogrammable ecu like a microtech? What can they actually achieve?

These things I don't know much about. I'm considereing selling my haltech for one of these as a $1.5k ecu doesn't seem to stack up against an $500 unit you could install yourself. As some of you know, io've only got minimal mods (ported heads, 63mm Throttle body etc)

Just some feedback from some of you guru's would be good.

And yes mickey i'm still going the turbo conversion but thats about 8 months down the track. And i know an apexi can't take car of a turbo conversion but can it take car of the mods thus far?

i'm not so sure on the specific differences between the S-AFC and the V-AFC, but i'm pretty certain that these things are used primarily to alter the airflow signal going into the engine so that the factory computer will think that there is actually more air being fed hence they supply more fuel...

as far as your current mods go Frank, it seems like you have done quite a bit of work towards the breathing aspects of the car so yeah I suppose the SAFC would come in handy.

Feel free to correct me though... :?

From memory the "V" in the V-AFC stands for VTEC YO!!!!! and allows you to adjust the point at which the VTEC YO!!!!! / Mivec kicks in.

But still can these things actually enhance performance?? What mickey mentioned before about "tricking" the ecu into thinking more air is going into sounds right but if you do intake mods then it should sence more air going in there anyway!?

I still can't see how these apexi's can help with fueling with mods

A quick answer to that would be, send an email to apexi, & see what answer they come up with.

Hi Jetlee,
I`ve got a unichip and it helped a lot. 11Kwt better improvement on my GR. If you are looking at one email me as I will be selling mine soon, as when I turbo mine I`ll have to go with the microtech. This is because the unichip does not have boost control. It cost $1200 all fitted. Check out their web site to see if a fitter is close to you. I`ll sell you mine for $500.

Is that 11kw on the wheel or flywheel? I've got unichip, it was tuned by APS, & only got 3kw at the wheel. You can get a boost controller modular for Unichip as well.

Jeff, what mods do you currently have on your GR? 11kw is very impressive.

Are unichips just like the greddy emanage?

2.5 cat back exhaust, Pod, CAI, and Air intake pipe.
The Unichip I think brings the most out when you have done some simple mods. I don`t think it is like the greddy, the unichip is a piggyback box that sits on your ecu and allows a decent tuner to tune your car better. I am sure I have read on this forum, that the FTO is tuned to 95 octane fuel. They do this because you can do damage by tuning to a high octane then run on low octane fuel (pre-ignition.) By using a unichip mine has been tuned a lot better, tuned for 98 octane, advanced timing, and extra fuel for the better air intake. I`m fairly sure that is what the unichip does. The person installing it obviously makes a difference.

Just to clarify...

Do you mean a gain of 11kw ATW on top of the gains the other mods had already given you or do you mean the overall gain from all the mods including the Unichip was 11kw?

I've got exactly the same, but with ported head, heat shield, 8.5mm coil lead (standard are 5mm), iridium spark plugs.

Hmmmmm maybe is time for me to do a re-tune, & see what figure i get this time at the wheel.
