couple of questions...

Post by Valandis91 »

how much power can a tip box handle?

whats the best way to drive with a tip to baby it if u have added power?

what shouldnt u do when driving a tip? (apart from burnouts)

when all the parts from my other thread gets put in im keeping the tip for a couple of years then doing a manual conversion...
im getting a trans cooler installed also.

cos its going to be even more revvy it would be a smart idea to upgrade the oil pump to that from a 6a13 yes?
could someone give me the part number for a 6a13 oil pump?

cheers

your tip box should handle, just look at simon running turbo with no dramas on the tip

as for oil pump i think the 6a13 is identical? correct me if im wrong but i would be confident your one will handle it. Its well known mitsi oil pumps are bulletproof

FTEvolution is running a 6A13TT setup on a FTO tip-tronic gear box.

Also, as far as I can tell, the 6A13's oil pump is an upgrade over the 6A12. It was discussed by 'd_dan' and Bennoz in a thread in the turbo section.

How much power/torque are you talking? I would say (if turbo'd) no foot flat gear changing, in fact, I usually button off for gear changes (was told to by an auto trans technician).

2+ years and some track action later all I have broken is an axle.

I too was planning to do a manual *up*grade but I have decided against it. I can spend about half the amount of a manual trans + upgraded clutch + labour and have an extremely strong auto box that will handle ~500 @ the flywheel + a mountain of torque...

umm not sure yet due to the cams being not tested before plus they are custom! estimate around 160kw NA... then with a 75hp shot of nos so around 180kw? just wild guesses there...
i button off for changes now anyways haha guess it just comes naturally...
but like say is it safe to floor it from stand still?
i wont be doing this obviously but just making sure what not to do!

I don't really know about flooring it from a standing start mate, I have to feather it from a stand still as with weight transfer (coilovers help a little but not much) it will light up instantly. Then again, being NA, you shouldn't hit full torque until mid rev range so perhaps it will be ok. What is the condition of your gearbox? Completely smooth? I would play it by ear and adjust your driving style.

Another hunch I have is if you can make it break traction there will be less stress on the internals anyways. It is nothing like revving up a manual and dumping the clutch, the auto box makes the whole process smoother :)

If you want to floor it off the mark then feel free, you will feel it if something isn't right (and if it is in good condition, you won't damage anything if you let it cool down).

A trans cooler is a very good idea, I would plumb it in series with the standard one (what I did) to enhance the standard cooling.

They can handle a lot of punishment.

On a partially related note, factory spec auto sky.lines with a big zorst will make an almost grunting noise on gear change, I have no idea what it is exactly, but the computer seems to force the engine to dump torque somehow (via a valve in the exhaust possibly) effectively buttoning off when at full throttle. This minimises the torque load through the auto box saving it from shattering.

To close, yes, if you can bring yourself to button off between gears, it will definitely be for the best of your gearbox :) Oh, and a diff upgrade would be advisable!

thats very helpful thanks dude!
my tip box is a bit worn... its jerky downshifting to 1st or lunges forward if uve stopped before it changes or if going to fast its like slamming on the brakes tthen letting off...
