My FTO had its timing belts replaced 40,000km's ago by its previous owner. When I bought the car (about 10,000km's ago) I had it serviced and they recommended I change the timing belts upon the cars next service.
What would you guys recommend doing? To my knowledge the normal interval is 80,000km's so obviously it is well below that. Bit tight for money at the moment and there are a couple of other things on the car that require fixing aswell such as sunroof and climate control.

Did they know that the timing belt was replaced 40,000 km's earlier? Does it look like its fraying at the edges of the belt itself? Any cracks forming? If its still looking OK you can hold it off a little longer.
If its frayed or has cracks in it then its priority.

I doubt they would have removed the Timing Belt cover when doing a routine service, I would be wary of that workshop, they may be trying to ask you "would you like fries with that? they are really good for you and you risk dying if you don't eat them"
Just be wary, a second opinion (by having someone inspect the condition of the belt) would be a good idea
Some of these workshops just try to ream anyone they think doesn't know much, bloody scare tactics, and it's underhanded!
First off timing belt replacement is every 100,000km not 80. so how many kms has your car done? and when was the belt supposedly changed?
