One option would be to use an escrow service that will handle vehicles (do a search for vehicle escrow in Australia on google.com.au).

Escrow works as an independant 3rd party to facilitate a smooth transaction. They ensure that you get your money and the other guy gets the goods purchased. There is however a fee involved, so you may need to get a few quotes first.

I recently bought a FTO from sydney (im in SA) and i went through VIP ph 0500 555 227.

They also do what ruchi has described below and yes there is a fee invovled, and i guess its up to the buyer to decide how he goes about it. For your benefit the transport company go over the car report this to the buyer before transporting it once the buyer is happy the cheque is handed over to you and they sign all papers on the buyer behalf.

I hope this helps :D

hmm but i wonder who should pay for that fee? i guess who ever is more desperate out of the 2 parties? obviously barfy paid for his, but in this case eric looks like more keen to ensure a safe transaction...

You need to get it transfered into the new owners name.

talk to your local roads office (e.g in Vic it is VICROADS) and ask them what the procedure is for selling a car interstate.

Until the car is transfered into the new owners name, you are still liable for anything that happens (speeding fines etc.)

i guess the question of who is organising the car to be transported needs to be asked, this guy must really really know what he wants or must be a millionare and the $18k or so must be poket change to him 8O

I would unregister the car before transporting it as the transport company deliver door to door so theres no need for him to have it registered when it arrives over there, and it also helps you with any unwelcome speeding fines :D

and when you take your plates back to the roads office, they should give you a refund on the balance of your registration.

Since you got his licence number make sure you check it with RTA, (eg: name/DOB/expiry are all correct.) You can even get the police to check if the photo is match.

BTW you can't use fax as legal document, so the best way is to express post the transfer form to him, get him to sign it & express it back. In that way you know you are cover. Plus theres no excuse if the signature doesn't match due to poor fax machine. Express post should cost you around $7.00 one way.
