FTO stalling after 5 mins
I have a problem with my FTO. It is a 1996 GPX Mivec Auto (tip).
At first the car would start normally, run for 5-10 mins and then engine would then stall. The car would stall while we were driving. It would not restart immediately. After about 5-10 mins it would restart and drive perfectly for an unlimited time.
We had is serviced and changed the fuel filter. The car worked ok for about a week and then the problem returned. This time the engine light would come on before the car stalled. The mechanic tested the code and said it was the booster control, however we do not have a turbo. He reset the computer and cleaned the throttle body and the car was fine for a few days, but then the problem returned. The problem was sporadic. Some days it would run fine, other times it would stall and we would have to wait 5-10 mins before it would start properly.
This time we had an electrician look at the car. He said that our alternator was overcharging and we had it replaced. The car worked for one day and now the problem has returned and is even worse. It will start and stall straight away. It will do the same after several attempts. It will then start normally, drive for about 5 minutes and then stall again. It will not restart until after another 5 or 10 minutes.
Today we disconnected the battery to reset the computer. After reconnecting the battery the car started perfectly. We left it to idle for 5 minutes, as instructed by the mechanic. but it stalled after only a few minutes. Once again it wouldn't restart straight away.
Please help??

I let the car run for 5min's, then i went for a short ride and it died. the engine light came on and it shut down and would not start for 5mins. it then started and i drove for 1min and the gears became erratic, going from forth to third to second to third and then died. again waiting 5min and it drove for 1min and the same problem occurred.Bennoz wrote:Stepper (Idle control motor) is shot. Could this be the computer itself ?

Haya, I did reset the ecu for over an hour, and it seems it hasent made any improvement. ill keep trying though. thanks for your helpBennoz wrote:Have you reset the ECU? Ie disconnect the battery for a half hour or more?
Also keep in mind, when you do this the car takes a good couple of hours of driving to 're-learn' where it is meant to idle. During this period the car will stall & f*ck around whilst it getting its sh*t together.
