Depends on who you ask.

Some people on the UK forum advocate removing exhausts and disconnecting suspension bits.

When I did mine I removed the intake plenum and everything off the back of the block I could, including the brackets for the plenum and the bracket holding the alternator to the block. Once I had loosened the power steering pipe and worked it under the alternator it was pretty easy to get out past the engine.

I can swap mine in and out, in around 50mins (but i have done mine about 6 times now :x ) I didnt need to remove the exhaust manifold but I did drop the strut by undoing the 3 bolts at the top.

mine took just over 2 hours - took it out from underneath without removing suspension or exhaust. replacement was from a CE lancer - $35 at pick a part - had to modify the top retaining bracket and pad the bolts to get it to line up - but got a 100A alternator that's smaller and easier to fit!

very very interesting.... Is your fto a gpx or gr? With it being smaller, do the belts fit ok??

it's a GPX - that was what sparked the search through acres of wrecks to find a suitable replacement.

Belts fitting wasn't too much of an issue. I changed the pulley off the lancer's one with the FTO one. The mod (read - cutting the bracket) was on the top bolt mount (not as structural). the idler pulley and tensioner has more than enough free play to take up the slight amount of slack that was introduced through the smaller alternator body.

sorry - don't have any process pics of changing the alternator - but I might be able to get hold of an after shot to show how it's mounted if anyone wants.

I did have to cut some new spacers because the CE's mounting bolt holes are a little further back from the front line of the alternator than the FTOs - nothing you can't do if you have a lathe, or an angle grinder/hacksaw and some patience.
