Leaking Cam Seals

One week after purchasing my 95 GPX i noticed an oil leak coming from the cam seals, I took the car to mitsubishi to justfy this and get a price on parts - $55
Has anyone else encountered leaking cam seals before?? I havnt heard of it occuring on a car with only 70,000kms

Yeah ive seen that on a few cars before. One car that I looked at had a whole blob of silicone around that head area to cover it up.

Sounds pretty cheap to fix though !? What parts did u buy to fix it, new gasket? Let me know how u go.

hi guys
i have a white gpx imported from japan, and when i went to get roadworthy mitsubishi rejected it for leaking cam seals...
the parts where cheap, like $30 each, but to replace was going to cost b/w $500 and a grand in labour!!!!!
I took the car to a number of other mechanics that said, yes the cam seals are leaking but it is not urgent. They said to wait till i got my timing belt replaced (in 30000kms) to do cam seals unless there was huge oil loss.
The guy said that one a small 1cm square oil drop on the floor, is the equivalent of one drop of oil, and it only is a concern if you get a deep puddle of oil.
I have never seen any oil drops at all, but i think some of the oil gets caught up in the mivec containter.
I would just keep checking oil levels, watch that your not losing much and then replace when you get your timing belt done. Otherwise you will have to pay for labour when yo8u get cam seals done, and tehn a year or so later when you do timing belt = EXPENSIVe!

Well mitsubishi quoted me $55 for parts and $370 for labour. They told me that i might as well get the timing belt done now ($230) since they like to do them at 90,000kms anyway and to save paying for the cost of labour twice as the job involves removing the timing belt anyway. Parts should be here by the end of the week if not ealry the following week so I hope im not without my FTO too long

Hey Just thought i'd let ya's know I got my Cam seals and timing belt replaced today, car's running good!

It was meant to be done under warranty by EDM Motors in Melbourne but the pricks there deny that there was any problem with the car. So I had to fork out the cash myself, and get Mitsubishi to do the work, which was done really well! thanks guys

What should I use to polish up the steel parts in my engine bay with now that I dont have oil getting on them??

MintFTO which Mitsubishi place did u take it to? Are those prices what you ended up paying? Get any other work done on your car?
Good to hear its running well now.
I'm getting belts replaced (p/s, a/c), new timing belt, cam seals, s.plugs, tappet adjust, fuel injectors cleaned, etc. next week. Hopefully all goes well!

Im also in melb.

Hey Chrisp,

Im not from Melbourne mate im from NSW but I did buy my FTO from Melbourne.

If your still interested I got the work done by MID Mitsubishi in Leeton, and i think it actually ended up being cheaper than what they quoted, $55 for seals, $230 for the belt and around $270 for labour.

Hope all goes well when your car gets worked on, is that the 100,000 km service your getting done??

yeah the 100,000km service. It really needs it I think (noisy and rattley). Thanks for the info, its always helpful to see what other people have been charged so we dont get ripped off. Cheers.

Hey Oragami,
I got the major service done at RANK ROTARY in mentone. They specialise in rotaries but will work on anything and a mate of mine works there.
Timing belt - $320
6 Platinum s-plugs - $22.80 ea
water pump - $410
2 drive belts - $30 ea
check cam seals and tappets
Labour 10 hours.
