tappets

Post by Fulltiltorgasm »

i have 97 gpx so mivec engine, just wondering its done 84,000kms and the tappets are slowly gettin progressively noiser, the engine runs very well ive had it serviced every 5,000kms since gettin imported at 60,000kms, im trying to leave the tappets until the major service as that way it makes sense doing it all in one, im pretty sure the tappets cant be damaged to much ??? and if possible avoid adjusting them till closer to the major service

any advice cheers

You can buy a oil additive, cant remember the name of it but i use it every service. It is especially for noisey tappets works awesome for around 5000-8000km

Get jonowong or someone to confirm, but I believe tappets tune-up can be had for $250 stand alone.

You won't damage them by leaving them til the major service, but if they're shitting you then just pay and have em fixed now.

$250 is about right to get them adjusted, might as well get them done before the major service because its an additional cost.

GPX = Adjustable
GR = non adjustable

got a quote on buying the tool from mitsubishi here in castlemaine before i found out about non mivec engines being non adjustable. nearly died when he told me the tube spanner was around $400.00 and the adjusting tool was around $250.00...dont talk to me about the special feeler gauges that you need also..another $250 plus.
bloody FTO's...
i still might buy em as will be handy to have.
maybe i can go into bussines ajusting the tappets on all the noisy mivec engines :?

Mate do a search on the adjuster tool. Someone's previously modified a tube spanner achieving the same thing as what mitsu sell. Plus it's either camskill or ftooc.uk that sell the tool as well. Also whilst gr tappets aren't adjustable, you're able to find aftermarket versions of these to replace

I just got a 10mm ring spanner, clamped it in the vice, heated it with the oxy and bent shaft at 90 degrees to the ring, then just got the grinder on the ring part to thin it down; works just fine. If you really want the tool, I know you can get the genuine Mitsu service tool from Camskill in the UK for 89 pounds + postage, maybe less than that as that price probably includes the 10% UK GST which wouldn't be applicable for an o/seas sale. But honestly the bent and ground ring spanner plus a phillips screwdriver works fine, just a bit of an arse taking the inlet manifold off to get at the rear cams.
The tappet quietening additive only works on HLAs not on solid lifters.

that comment was about as useful as tits on a bull. I doubt many ppl on here would even know the difference, including myself.

So im guessing your saying that the GPX's have solid tappet's and the gr's have HLA's???

Yeah, hydraulic lifters ( HLA= hydraulic lift actuators or hydraulic lash adjusters as the Yanks call them), the additive helps to clear out carbon/crap build-up in the narrow oilways in the lifter, these blockages stop the lifter 'pumping up' properly by reducing internal oil pressure, hence they become noisy.
Solid lifters as fitted to mivec motors are better for performance as they provide consistent valve opeinig as no 'give' in them, however are noisier in operation and require relatively frequent adjustment due to wear at point of contact. Mivec engine runs at .1mm on inlet and .13mm exhaust hence only need to be out by a few thou to start getting annoying. FTO engine is a particular pain in the ass to adjust, as are most transverse V-engines as have to remove inlet manifold to get to rear bank; hence most people pay to get it done, somewhere in the $200-300 region is the usual. There are some really good guides to doing it on this site if you search
Hope that's of some help without going on too much, sorry if I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs!
