jonowong wrote:sounds like its low on transmission fluid or the torque converter is rooted
you can get a tiptronic gearbox for pretty cheap, in fact ive got one here in strathfield if you want it
how much.??
& would u check out my car.. seems like u know your stuff..
im new with these fto's soo i would love to get to know them better considering this car is going to be with me for a few more years..
2000 sounds ordinary .,. but he cant really quote you without really opening it up and seeing whats damaged inside, syncros or bearings, etc
i paid 550 for a a rebuild new bearings and had all my syncros fixed up paid a mate 100$ to take my box out and put it back in .
I had the same problem round two years ago, the half with grease monkey changed my transmission fluid, 50km away it sh*t itself and would not get out of neutral.
It cost be around 2K to rebuild it, DON'T DO IT. I don't trust it still and I am just waiting for it to go again. Should have done a manual conversion and forgone the cost for a piece of mind. Or at least I should have gotten a new/semi-new one put in.
Shop around and check all you options, that what I should have done, now I am paying for it.
But there are people on here who've driven 200,000+ kms on their tip boxes & not had any problem if they are well serviced. The tip boxes in FTO's are a rip off of a Porsche system & overall are very strong. The weakest link is the torque converter & the input / output speed sensors. I dare say that anyone who's had a 2 grand rebuild would not have had a single cog removed from the box. It'd be machining of the trans headers & new torque converter, bang, back in the car, 2 grand thanks very much.
LOL, Yeah, I Didn't know about FTO Australia at that time... Apparently the previous owners had not serviced the transmission before and the oil change caused the bits and bobs (technical terms) to seize. I have no Idea what they did to it, probably just cleaned it.
just thought id bump this thread instead of opening another.
my box, sounds like its on the way out..
its whining simalar to a supercharger and started not changing gears smoothly.
i was going to get the transmission flushed but, i dont think that will get rid of the whining noise?

anybody else had the noise (not the clunking,)
you would be surprised at what fresh oil will do
