Removing FTO Clutch

Post by FtoSam »

Okay... I need to take my gearbox out...

two options:
1) Do it at a mates place (He has room to leave the car there for as long as needed and all the tools including jacks, engine hoist, etc)

2) do it in the service dept at work and pay off the manager with lots of beer... But can only work on it on days off (once a fortnight)

How hard is it to get out the FTO box without hoisting it?

Is it just going to be easier to get the engine AND box out at once?? It would give me a good excuse to change engine mounts, do the tappets and lifters, and fit all my guage senders... not to mention a bit of chroming...

Thoughts?

i say at the service department mate....it took 5 hours to drop the gearbox change the clutch and re fit it mate.......i think you dont need to hoist the engien i could be wrong though??i think you jsut need to wriggle the gearbox out around the k-frame so much easier on a hoist,

Service dept for sure, it has to come out underneath. You need to pull the lower cross member out anyway, so you do the mounts then as they bolt to it.

Might be worth your while getting another pressure plate from a wrecker & having the springs on it beefed up before hand. Then you could do the whole job in a day - seeing as you're not replacing the clutch plate itself, there's no need to machine the flywheel mating face. All you'll need is a clutch plate aligning tool for when you reassemble.

Also, if you're doing tappets - dont forget in the non mivec motor, they aint adjustable, you just need 24 replacements from Kempys.

depends on what sort of hoist you need.....
flat ramp style with independent jacks about 10000+
centre post arm style about 7000+
mid height hoist/jack around 2000+
but most hoists usually require 3 phase power
those are rough prices for new ones in NZ though :D

+1^ But nowhere as easy as use using hoist but if you have no probs killing your back it can be done without it 8O
But if you have access to hoist highly reccomend the wait if you can will save many many hours and pain

Just a pain in arse getting under car on back on hard floors, especially when car is so low to ground i'm sure most people here dont have access to most of the equipment we are used to in workshops like creepers etc
Why did they not use hoists? makes life soooo much easier

What are you, the guy who likes to do things the hard way?? If you got a hoist, you use it!

I've pulled a few boxes out & I wouldn't touch it it with a 10 foot pole if there was no hoist. In fact Im pulling mine out again next weekend to fit the new diff

LOL

HEy simon... do you a deal... you come up to brisbane one sunday and help me remove the engine and box, and i'll give you my pipework for a week to get duplicates made up....

Should halve the cost of getting yours made....

Not looking to do this for a while now as my tax return was far far less than anticipated...
