Problems with the engine

Post by ellusion »

I have just come across two problems with my engine today.

The first is that when turning my engine on, it will stay on for about 2 seconds, then turn off. I'll repeat this several times before it actually starts and stays running. What is the cause of this?

My second problem is that when i rev my engine, i can hear tapping noises under the engine cover. Whats this?

My car is a GR.

1. does the motor 'choke' as it starts? if so it could be faulty spark plugs or compression issue, or it could also be an electrical fault with the battery/wiring/alternator/stepper motor

2. assuming your car is a GPX, your tappets may need adjustment

tappets noisy when reving? there must be a bigger underlying issue or the tappets are way out of tune.

i would be going to a mechanic who knows the MIVEC engines pretty quickly on both accounts. it could be minor or major but you won't know.

do you have a tip? (sorry i can't remember) if your neutral light starts flashing then get a trained mechanic to plug in a MUT II device it'll tell them exactly what is wrong (at least for the first problem)

He spelled out GR pretty clearly I thought

GRs are supposed to have self adjusting tappets from what I heard...

when is the last time you had a service on this car?

i swear the FTO must be the worse offender with stuffed lifters! I've been having lifter noises for 2.5 years now, and they are lound all the time now, but in the hotter weather it stops! My tappets are the worst ive heard in any car, even crap boxes!

Whats the deal with replacing them and how much?

It's a Mitsubishi thing, must be something in the way they designed the lifters originally, and they've just kept using the same design. (if you listen to the cars in peak hour traffic, you can pick the Mitsi's by sound) Almost all (petrol) Mitsi's have some sort of a tappet rattle of one sort, always when you're low on oil, or are using the wrong spec oil. Once wear has begun though, there's on real way back.
