Sounds like one of the tensioner pulleys is starting to seize up.

I know of at least 2 fto's that are constantly shedding power steeting belts. Ive had a chat with Mike at Camskill and apparently its the rubber on the main Crank Pully that is on its way out and replacing the crank pulley stops them shreading belts. Its a common problem on all mitsi's (FTO, VR4, GTO etc...)

Mike has standard crank pulleys in stock for £119.00

I also have light weight pulleys in stock fot £109.00

I had this happen to my car through 3 belts after replacing the tensioner pulley. I've got a slightly shorter belt on it now and all seems fine, though I suspect what RichardB has said may be my problem. ( I think the tensioner pulley I have is a dud). If this fails I've decided with my mechanic to replace it with one with sides, you can get them custom made to suit any car, just cost about 3 times an original replacment
