heating problem....please help

My Fto runs fine up to about 80k/h, But any faster and it wil constantly fluctate up and down to a level that is very nerve wrecking. I have checked for leaks and fluid but seems fine. If you have encountered this problem please help.

Could be a valve or electronic issue, take it to a mechanic who specialises in Imports.

where are you? so we can let you know the best places to go.

yea i got similar problem

originally it would overheat at any speed and just in a few minutes of driving so i got the radiator replaced and it seemed ok until i drove past 80kmh and then the temp needle always goes skitz...
but it is strange that if u stop, the secondary fan turns on and then the temp returnz bak 2 the middle but drive again past 80 den it goes up again...

i was told that it is becoz of a damaged head gasket and that its pretty $$$ to fix it, but i'm trying to get this resolved and we c how goez...

I am in Sydney. I've already taken it to 1 mechanic who deals with imports. He couldn't find the problem.

I don't think it's the head gasket though. Cos i blew a piston and got it all changed but the heating problem still exists.

I would also be interested to know what the best places to go are in Sydney. Too many times I have had mechanics tell me they don't know anything about FTOs...

Well i use and recommend Unique Auto Sports (Castle Hill) in my opinion they are the best around. With the amount of major surgery they have done to many FTO's (and the amount of times theyv'e had my car apart testing mods) if they aren't the most experienced they will be one of them.

Make sure you let them know you come from the forums and they'll take care of you.

I had simular problems with the engine seemingly over heating, after hours of frustration I changed the thermostat and replaced it with one from a late model galant which opens at a cooler temp than a stock fto one (which suits our climate better). Also check that the water temp sender unit is operational and is the correct one as each year of production they seem to have changed the sender units,they look the same but they are different (electrically). Note that the sender unit doesnt just operate the water temp guage it also sends signals to the ecu, which if incorrect or faulty will make the car run like a pig.

That sounds like a good idea, I'll give that a go. But how would I know if it's the correct one?

Talk to a mitsubishi dealer that stocks fto parts,quote him your chassis/vin number (on fire wall) and he will be able to supply you with the right one.They arent expensive so replace it anyway,cant hurt to be sure.If youve never replaced the sender unit chances are its the right one but it could still be faulty!

I've got an heating issue as well. After about 10mins of driving the water temp will start making it's way over the half way mark. After it's almost made it's way to about 3/4 of the guage the fans kick in and knock the temp down to 1/2 again. Hopefully I'll get it check out this week.
