Lancer steering rack for FTO?

Post by benm7 »

Hey guys,

Does anyone know if a lancer steering rack will fit a FTO? Took my car to East Coast Suspensions and they are fitting a Lancer (CE I guess) steering rack to replace my one.

Will this have any adverse affects on performance etc?

Cheers

From what I can see, it depends on the steering rack you have. Depending on year of manufacture (and model), the following part numbers were used (according to CAPS):

MR171469 (CJ4A,DE3A)
MR131572 (DE2A,DE3A - FTO ONLY)
MR130391 (Used by heaps of different ones)

I think CJ4A is lancer

Then it looks as though yours is most likely the top one (which matches CJ4A)

Now you just need to find out which model lancer that is (someone on the forum should know)

      Thanks dstocks,

Did a bit of a google search, it looks like a 97 lancer of some description. The mechanic said the replacement steering rack was slightly larger than the stock FTO one, not sure what he means by that exactly thgouh

Right, so $860 later I got my car back!

Initial thoughts are that it is DEFINATELY not a FTO steering rack. Steering feels much lighter, with less turn in and lock.

Car seems to feel more stable on road but certainly not perfect. Gave it a thrashing then and it still squirms a bit on uneven road.

So i'm pretty p!ssed but at the point where im over it, have pumped $3k into it and solved not a great deal.

SO I need advice on what to do next. OPtions:

      1. NOTHING!!! Plan on selling in May of next year, so ride the storm till then.

      2. New front tyres. Have changed just about everything on the front end (rack, cv joints, shocks, bushes, new strut brace), so the only other option could be tyres.

If I go down option 2 and find the tyres help, then I have the issue that maybe it wasnt the steering rack, and then I am not sure whether to get my old rack back... Oh man, the dramas!

      Advice?

      Ben

Alignment. What did they set it all at? Any toe, any camber, any castor?
