not necessarily FTO617.
Scracy blew his torque converter on a dyno.
I too am sceptical that this is the gearbox. It could well be, but all we're suggesting is get another opinion and look at some of the other options.

I didnt actually break the gear box,i broke the converter. What your mechanic is saying is not true since if it is the converter that is shot most if not all the broken parts would still be inside the converter.I dont think an entire rebuild would be neccesary as an inspection and a good flush out should be sufficient incase some small amounts of metal from the torque converter got into the fluid which it most probably would have.As ruchi said i broke mine after a dyno run.Keep in mind that all manufacturers design the converter to break, ford holden toyota etc all the same.If your converter has spat it and i suspect it has rebuild it with a stronger stator etc. this will cost about $330 not incl labour.A new one would cost around$2000 not incl fitting and would eventually break as thats what its designed to do.Does your engine still rev ok but make a grinding/rattleing noise? and no gears yeah?

not necessarily payaya and the gearbox won't necessarily need to be replaced. Scracy has been through this first hand so it would pay to take his advice fto617. Likewise from what you desribed happening I too question whether this is the gearbox or just the torque convertor. There'll be a big difference in price!

dont let that greedy prick mess you around man, he thinks he has you by the balls coz you cant move the car and therefor he can dictate what the problem is since you cant get another assessment. get another mechanic to look at it somehow, te me it sounds like ruchi is right.

Firstly let me acknowledge that there is a possibility that the problem could be your gearbox. Having said that, however, based on what you described as happening and based on the symptons you described, this possibility is very low.
I can understand from the original messages you posted why you would have thought it was the gearbox, but as mentioned before, you cannot change from 2nd to 1st when doing 100kmh, and changing from 3rd to 2nd at this speed shouldn't put any undue stress on your gearbox.
When it comes to cars, Scracy has more expertise than me. Likewise he has experienced the exact same symptons / situations that you have had. If I was in your shoes, I'd be heeding his advice.
As Scracy has mentioned, the torque convertor is designed to break before the gearbox does. Unless there was something already severly wrong / weakened with your gearbox changing from 3rd to 2nd at 100kmh won't harm it. If there was something wrong with the gearbox before hand, chances are you would have noticed it (probably a noise).
At the end of the day, it is your car and it's your mechanic, and you will need to make the decision. It makes no difference to us, but all we're trying to do is help a fellow FTOer save some money and not get ripped off.
P.S.
listen to Scracy, he know's his stuff

hey guys !
my mechanic is sooooooooooo $@#%$$^
i asked if it blew the torque converter and he goes
"even if i change the torque converter, it wouldnt be as good when u change gears so might as well source a second hand tip box from jap"
man how much do u guys think fitting a second hnd tip box would cost??
and UAS agreed to do a manual conversion for me
"Conversion kit exchange is $1900 plus if you want a new upgraded
clutch and
machined flywheel, recommended extra $600 and labour is $98 an hour
and
suspect around 15 hours. Also depends if you want dash change also?"
so which one do u think i should choose???
i'm still wondering how much it would cost me to swap another tip box any ideas guys??? coz i need to make this decision right away !
if changing to another tip box gona cost me like 2.5-3k i might as well do the manual stuff with UAS yea?

based on your quote, it appears you asked them about doing a manual conversion, not about fixing your car.
Do you want a conversion or do you want your car fixed?
Somewhere like UAS should have the skills necessary and be honest enough to tell you whether you simply need your torque convertor fixed or whether you need the whole gearbox changed.
If it's just the torque convertor, as some of us here suspect, then getting this fixed should be both cheaper and easier than doing a full conversion.
