High flow cat and high flow muffler would give power and better sound too...for not much more than what they've quoted you. If they're changing your exhaust from catback, means the muffler will be changed too. You'll probably gain a bit of power imho, long as they do a decent job (mandrel bends and good muffler). You'll most probably feel it when you drive it.

I got quoted $580 for a hi flow cat, 2" (not 2.5 even though thats what i asked for) and a 'sports' muffler, she wouldn't tell me what brand

... she was pretty horrible. Then she said thats press bent and when i asked for mandrel she said $1060 ...
I'm not sure if she was being serious or not
OOPS: just realised how old this thread was

Yesterday i got quoted $400 for catback with cannon or $600 for cat (not hiflow) + catback with cannon at A1 Exhausts. I'm not sure if that was mandrel, but he did say it was handmade so i guess so.

Dont get a cat unless its highflow or theres really no point in getting the exhaust, you might as well use a brick for a muffler. the whole point is to UPGRADE, $400 for catback seems a good price i doubt however that would be for mandrel bent, and make sure you get 2.5 inch exhaust.

Don't have to have a cat over here. Pro's to de-cat? Seem to change my mind every day now...

Yeah none of my cars back home had cats so much less restrictive
The engine breathes much better, the only pro for having one is that it better for the environment thats all. Performance and sound wise (IMO) is much better without cat. Ive been thinking about pulling my cat off and smashing the insides out, so that if a cop does look he will think i have the cat, but i gotta see how big the cat is first before i bother

Environment?? Its no wonder some Kiwis I've met have scars on their shoulders from where second heads were removed. Non-catted unleaded by products are carcenogenic! Bit like the Winne Gold Im sucking back at the moment

+1 for Christ at Best Mufflers haha.

carcinogenic VS having to shell out for a Hi-Flow cat.... and I don't normally crouch down and take a few hits of exhaust fumes while she's warming up

if EPA catch you with a bashcat, you'll cop a fine worth more than your car.
last i heard, it was $25,000, but i'm not sure now. they have devices to gauge exhaust content too, so its not like they have to take the exhaust apart to know.
on top of that, have you ever smelt an exhaust with a bashcat? its disgusting, like a swamp with dead animals in it.

...
Bloody hell...
Just run a cat, so much better for the environment. I'm no tree hugging hippie but the environment is looking pretty shite atm. And then you don't gotta worry about copping a 10grand or 25grand fine either. You'll only gain a couple of kw atw without it
FWIW, i only had an axle back high flow and a high flow cat and my car was laying down 116kw atw. Was plenty enough after weight reduction.
People tend to bloody not realise going big pipes extractors blah blah loses some major low down power so crucial for city driving. Plus your car will drone on like a fart in a can.
