ok so i think i might have finally found something worth buying,however when i checked the rego on vicroads it said it was manufactured in 2001? which made me question whether this guy was being legit or not?thoughts?

2001 will be the date it was complied in Australia (IIRC). But firstly, there's no such thing as a GPX R. It may indeed be a Version R, but you'd want to check the VIN decoder to be sure. Also 5 speed tiptronics are rare and if it breaks you'll have to fight Astron boy for replacements.

Is quite possibly a version R. Certainly has a version R wing, although that was optionally available on the GPX as well. If it is a version R, itll have black seats with no pattern in the fabric and have manual aircon(no climate control). The price is toward the top end of things, so it would be better if it was a version R instead of a GPX as they keep their value better. And the red Version R's are quite rare too.

He doesnt know much about the car though as the kit on the car isnt ralliart, its stock with Veilside sideskirts, although associating a Version R with Ralliart is a popular misconception. It is probably a 97 model as FTO's completed production in 2000. The govt frequently screws this date up and uses the compliance date instead of the build date. In the end it doesnt make any difference.

All in all, well worth a look. It would need to be pretty tidy though at that price.

Messaged him earlier and he said that it does have black seats as well as a manual aircon so im assuming it is a version r? gonna go have a look tomorrow and hopefully everything inside is clean and that it runs smoothly as well, thanks again guys

I have only seen a couple of other red version R's in Australia. Vectose (club member) has one of them.

When ever you see an import that says "one lady owner" or "genuine kms", its BS.

An FTO is 20 years old. Even only 10,000km a year that 200k. Imports are notorious for incorrect odometers. And it could have a replacement engine.

Ignore the odometer and asses its worth in other ways.

Yeah.. not sure I bought my '96 GPX with 104,XXX on the clock. Dealer said it was imported in 1999 and some asian lady sold it to him, but wasn't the first owner. I would be the 3rd to own it in Australia, not sure how many owned it in Japan, but the interior is very clean. Only scratches are under the door and on the glove box. Not sure what to make of it, but the seats weren't worn at all...paint was good, and 100km service receipt kept... makes me believe the km's were genuine.

Compared to most of the FTOs I see trying to be sold off his starting price seems reasonable, and from what I can tell that car does look clean would definitely be a good buy, even if you overpaid a bit. In my opinion, should probably offer him $6k - $6.5k and see what he says?
