Agreed. Ive got the same noise, its a high pitched screech and only comes when i start the car.

I just changed my alternator belt and it wasnt that. So im changing the other belt as it's looking well past its days. Realised that one of the bolts holding the alternator down was missing and the unit itself was at a wierd angle aswell contributing to the alternator belt coming off and ripping itself apart.

The alternator can also make a whining noise at low RPMs when it's on the way out.

Just had my car fixed and it was the power steering pump making that noise, i was also having other issues with my steering, so fixed 2 things at once.

Also the screw behind the alternator was not screwed in properlly, that was casuing start up issues etc, so good to check that out aswell.
