manual or tip?
Hi guys, im choosing between a gpx. i personally drive manual but have never driven a tiptronic before.
how different is it?
is it as exciting as the manual? faster or just a some gearstick fun for the boring driver?
what do i need to look for when buying a gpx?

depends what you see yourself driving it like i reckon
i see myself driving pretty hard in motorsports so i got a manual... plus it keeps me busy compared to an auto.
i think the tip gear change is delayed by about a second
though the tip would definetly be more suited for daily driving
im thinking of changing my brass button clutch soon for a non brass heavy unit if i can just because of the daily driving

definately delayed, but the delay varies a little depending on how well u look after your gear box and stuff, and if u learnt to drive in an auto it helps too (they teach you to back off the accelarator when u change gears, that shortens the delay ever so little).
basically the tip is just like an auto with a little bit of extra control and it changes down gears so u dont labour but never changes up even if u r about to blow the car up.
if u look after the tip and drive around with it for a while, u'll get the hang of it and timing the gear change wont be a problem.

The tip doesn't delay for 1sec, its around 1/2 a sec. So all u have to do is change your gear early and it will be fine.
E.g. if you want to change gear at 8000rpm, u just change it around 7500rpm and due to the delay, it will change at 8000rpm. I don't see a big deal of it. You just need to learn to drive it.
But the real decision should comes down to where do you drive the most, if is in the CBD area, then i suggest a tip. But if you go on to open road a lot then manual is the way to go.
I use to own both manual and tip FTO, but i end up selling the manual one first, because i drive a lot of shot trips with traffics and around CBD.

My tip was a lot faster than a second to switch (I had the 5spd) but ultimately you cant compare a tip to a manual. Tip is basically a controlable automatic. It just means you have the power to tell the car at what rpm you want it to gear up/down etc.
I converted mine to manual and never regretted it but as was said all depend on what you want the car for. Manual also allows more power to get to the wheels whereas the Tip will lose about 15hp more. Also manual will handle more power if you plan on doing serious mods.

1) lesser running costs. Maintenance is cheaper
2) cars going nowhere, f**k....wait, it was just a clutch/flywheel. Dirt cheap to replace compared to an entire auto assy.
I think people also need to consider that a manual gearchange is not instant. want to time your changes? I'll bet most people dont take only half a second to change gears when cruising around the city normally.

dude seriously.. get a manual.
no offense to the people who own tip, but to if your buying a sports car get a manual! You can't complete the feeling of thrashing your car unless u drive manual, tip is great if that's your thing.
I would advise you to get a tip only if:
You can't be bothered changing gears all the time and want luxury over speed.
You can't drive a manual (i couldnt before I had my fto, i learnt manual on it)
Somebody is paying you $5000 if you buy a tip..
and you can already drive manual, plus u don't have to go through peak hour traffic, so I don't even know why you're bothering to ask such an onvious question.. go for the manual! lol sorry.. but if I had bought a tip, then I would have thought it was normal (cos I wouldn't even feel what it feels like to drive a manual fto) but I bought a manual and I'm so glad I did cos you're in so much more control and it just completes the feel more than anything else! Honestly, "tiptronic" is just a fancy way of saying auto!
(plus a stock manual GR will beat a stock GPX - just barely though, since I raced a white mivec fto a while back and by the time we hit 80 he was almost a full cars lenght behind)
If you're going to buy a tip so your gf can drive it, then just buy a family car
