QUICK QUESTION on Engine

Post by I8A4RE »

Right when eva i fully accelarate from a standstill position i get a shuddering from the front of the car that i think is a fu&*ed engine mount. if so how do i tell which 1 is rooted. the only other thing i could think it might be is rooted front shocks. any one?

simple answer, have a look. On the magna's you know when its fucked, because a little strip of rubber likes to come free and flap around poking out the engine mount.

Most likely is the engine mount, what your describing is "bunnyhopping" and is a classic symptom of
a) too much power (but your cars not modded, right?)
b) Worn engine mounts.

*could* be blown front/rear shocks, but i doubt it. Your ride hasnt suddenly become really bouncy (like a waterbed) right?

you sure u r not just spinning your tyres? :?

i know i'm probably wrong, but seeing that u cant even get my name right, i'm assuming u wont be bright enough to know if its just your wheels spinning. :P JK JK

and no i doubt it'll be shocks being rooted, the physics doesnt work that way

2 people

Post by dstocks »

Engine mounts on the FTO are a weakness. Ive had one of mine go. TO check, need 2 people. Sit in car with foot on brake and in drive. tap accelerator. Get your mate to see how much the engine lifts. Try same using reverse. If you get about an inch of lift (2.5cm), your mount has probably gone the way of the dodo. Which way it liftf will indicate which one os gone!

Good luck

    Same Deal

    Post by dstocks »

Same deal. Foot on brake, let out clutch (maybe not all the way) while in gear with a bit of accelleration. I know, this isnt easy cause you need 3 feet, but it is possible. Do same for reverse.

    I think it should work.

      Yeah

      Post by dstocks »

Yeah, just need to put the engine under a little load - it'll twist up/down without the mount to hold it down

Or if you gotta jack - undo the 4 17mm bolts holding the crossmember on, then undo the 2 14mm bolts hold the mounts to the car... drop the cross member out & inspect the bushes. Its usually the front on that goes.

Is there a bush between the front mount and the bolt? I ask because when I took out my gear box I noticed that the hole through the mount was much bigger then the bolt which went through it. Should there be a bush in there?

Thats kind of what I thought but I cant see what is missing to make it nice and snug? Maybe I just need to get a new one anyway?

For about 20 quid delivered it'd be daft not too.

maybe its jsut been worn out to that size from the engine movement. that generally happens with things with a lot of power and movement to them that have bolts through them and it's not fitted properly (it happens to rims),

        stry bout typos drunk

Its not supposed to be a snug fit on the bolt through the front bushing centre sleeve. The tension on that bush is governed by the crush of the bolt on the sides of the mount. All FTO's are the same. The rear bushing is a different type - it is meant to be a snug fit (the pivoting bush)

Having said that I8AFRE, you might want to check the tension of that bolt going thru the front mount... it needs to be nipped up pretty tight. I have had it cause me shuddering before (also had a shot rear mount too, but yeah..)
