Mongoose alarm - anyone?

Looking at getting this alarm installed, anyone had any experiences with it or recommend something better?

Not sure what it's going to cost yet, I'm waiting to hear back about a quote.

M80 is an excellent alarm.

But IMO 90% of a security system is how it's installed. Try to find a ASIAL accredited installer who has worked with FTOs.

I had the older version of this, never had a problem, no false alarm like lots of those toy one.

And the other good thing about this alarm is, its insurance approved.

Yeah, that's one of the main features that attracted me to it.

So far I've been quoted $540 fully installed. Does that sound reasonable?

the guy at my insurance company (young and cool) told me heaps of stories of car that have been insured by them with a mongoose alarm that have been stolen really easily (300zx, wrx, commo, etc,etc). because mongoose are so common, it's really easy to get the electrical schematics and bypass the alarm. $540 is a pretty average price, might be worth shopping around a bit.

make sure the alarm you get has genuine 3-point immobilisation with on board relays inside the module (external relays are much easier to bypass) otherwise a lot of insurance companies will not pay out a claim for theft. if you dont have immobilisation for the fuel pump, someone can hop in the car and clutch-start it, even with ignition and starter motor immobilised.

i got a rhino alarm system (top of the line at the time) with genuine 3-point immobilisation (starter motor, ignition and fuel pump). rhino also have all-black, non colour-coded wires meaning that the only way you would be able to know which wire to cut would be if all of the wires had tags left on them. i got a discount through my insurance company which brought it down to about $590, and then talked the actual installer down to $460. try offering them cash, but make sure you get a receipt and install certificate signed by a licensed installer.

get someone with experience to install the alarm (strathfield car radio generally don't know jack and do really crappy install jobs.)

hope some of this helps you. just remember though, if someone REALLY, DESPERATELY wants your car, and they have a few spare brain cells, they'll find a way to get it, an alarm can only really slow them down. but that could make all the difference.

Ive got a M80G

5 star rated foir insurance companies,
only rteal problem ive had is the bonnet pin is made of nylon and promptly snapped off the first week i had it.

i think its fine but if i was going to buy an alarm today i would buy one with a remote start and pager.

i paid just over $400 for it 2 years ago and another $400 odd for installation, all the wires are black and unlabeled so you cant install them yourself (and thieves dont know which 1 to cut)

remotes eat through batteries too

i got M20 something...with all black wires + backup battery. everything is good but the remote. not sensative at all. have to walk near or sometimes around the car to activate it.

would want to try somehing else at jbHiFi. one model offers remote starting in a two way lcd remote. can sense it pretty far away. cool!

I've got a mongoose alarm, not sure what model ... real helpful - i know, but I'm thinking of going for a Viper alarm when I upgrade, which would be soon, cause I want one with a pager and remote start, my current one doesn't even go off when its been hit by someone - I wanna be paged if something happens to my car.

Make sure you get it wired up and programmed by someone who knows what they're doing, my alarm arms itself after 30 seconds & its really annoying!!!

sounds like you have a lower model. check out the website, they do a bunch of addons and stuff.

as for viper, i wouldn't touch 'em - from what i've read they're very easy to get pass, and they're pretty much a toy. and, it doesn't come close to AU standards so no insurance company will insure you with it.

I use to have a top of the line Viper alarm in one of my old cars. I was told by a car alarm professional that Viper are very easy to over ride, as their valent code are all the same for every units and models. The reason why I believed him, is because he sells them, and he said, he only stock them due to some customers insist on having Viper.

mr-charisma does your alarm comes with dual shock sensor or just single? And you might just have to set the sensor or a higher "sensitive" range, but the down side of that is, if someone drive pass with a loud exhaust, the vibrations from it will set your alarm off. And that goes the same with any brand of alarm.

ok first off $540 is not a bad price for alarm and install

what thats ridiculous $400 installation it would take the guy 3 hrs at most to wire it up thats more than $100 hr not even rip off mechanics charge that much

for about $300 u can get one that sms your mobile phone that attaches to the alarm that u already have cant remember where though ill have look its definitly a australian company though

yeah so does mine but apparently that is the australian standard and insurance companies that i have dealt with dont need no certificate that its been installed cause if u report your car stolen and it turns up and doesnt have an immobilser they wont pay out but with justcar insurance i havent checked them all

strathfield r sh*t they just cut and paste lol and as dfunked says if some 1 wants in they will get in thats why no matter what u get, get one with sms capability or at least a pager (or just sleep in your car) lol

u need a australian std 2pt immobiliser for your insurance......the alrm is optional.
