Unique Autosport Under-paying?

Post by Redboost »

Got this from another forum.....

"Just a note..

friend started working at Unique maybe a week and half ago..
when asked how much the pay is John (read --> well famous wanker) kept on saying that he'll tell him later (yeah friend's an idiot too for starting work without actually knowing how much he's gona get paid..)
anyway.. after a week and half of working Unique finally told him that he's getting paid $4/hr twice a year~
how interesting.. "have a nice day~"

so for all u youngen's out there who's thinking of getting a job at Unique, make sure u find out how much they're paying u... or else just go screw his wife for the additionals..
haha.. "

Can anyone confirm this story?

I didnt think you could get paid that little....ever. I think you could earn more than that delivering newspapers or brochures.

i have no idea what UAS pays his guys but to attract the quality of staff he does they must be paid pretty well. for example Harvey has worked at Ralliart preparing the EVO's for the Australian Rally Championship.

I know there was a guy on trial last week <name withheld> who fluttered in and out and had plenty of "other things" he had to do. this guy ended up throwing about 1000.00 (i think that was the number) worth of brand new parts in the bin, not to mention loosing many tools.

UAS has had several new people on trial to see if they cut the mustard so to speak, this person was one of those who didn't.

i don't understand this "twice a year" thing cause i know his staff get paid weekly.

these "friend of a friend" or "my friend" stories are always dubious at the best of times, as they can not be substantiated.

I found that a bit hard to believe. Stories allways seem to change when a friend tell's a friend and then a friend of a friend, etc, etc. By the end of the line the real story has mutated to somthing completely different. There might be a story there, but I dont think it's as dramatic as that.

However, I guess you could get that kind of treatment from a shabby mechanic down the road but not from a reputable one.

Jus my 2 cents :)

well i for one would have serious issues with having Unique FTO stickered on my car and working with them to create bolt on modifications for the FTO. if the place was run like a sweat shop.

I've known john and most of the Unique guys now for a long time, even over a few beer's i've never heard them complain about money.

It does not take much though when this young rascal over did it so much. Especially stooping so low to involve my wife and the pay twice a year rubbish. He should put his V drink down and get real.
His resume was so impressive and he may have some great attributes but not in common sense or be man enough to cop on the chin he was nto suitable at all for the position.
I told him before he started that he would only get award wage to start with and I told him this was very average for a 17 year old and only around $180 a week. I guess everyone knows young guys can mess up and have to show them lots as they don't know much yet think they do. Also to help compensate for what is thrown out in this case which was amazing and scarely accidental find and suprise for us.
He sort of worked for us on trial for two and a half days and went for long lunches and had to help his Dad and go do this and that etc.
Anyway you get the picture and don't believe all of what you here on forums.

I've posted this reply on the other forum I got the article from and they're rather sceptical about the truth of this matter as far as the other party is concerned, particularly when it came to the $4 an hour/twice a year payment part. Just goes to show, you can't believe anything you hear unless you hear it straight from the horse's mouth.

I first read it and laughed in amazement and then when I read it about the being paid twice a year. That was, lets say showing how stupid one can be when drinking TOO MUCH V and mixing it with something else.
When one has a set back you dig deep and improve not go silly like this, or prob exaggerated to the max by his mate. The laws of life hey?

well you said it... especially a forum that is basically sponsored by the company in question.
I cant speak for the guy, but i know for a fact that when they(unique) said they had a sale on (everything), and i called em, they were more expensice than before the sale, so someone is full of sh*t and knowing what mechanics(and business men) are like it is probably both of you.
You can all draw your own conclusions but can anyone tell me an employer who did not try to f**k the new guy(and the customers) up the ass?

:D .. I deal with Unique for all my FTO stuff. They have never stuffed me around once, their pricing has been competetive and most of all the workmanship has been excellent. A couple of times I have gone in for little things - (things that didn;t need parts only a little time) and they did not charge me at all. I am usually wary of recommending people (been bitten too many times) - but I FULLY recommend Unique with John and all his team. (First I'd heard about Unique sponsoring us - I thought Stephen did all the work???) John's team all look quite happy with their lot to me.... one does have to wonder - can they ALL be wrong?...not!

Sure, let start with my formal company which is one of the largest finance company for "small ticket" finance, my current company (I.T), & myself, as i use 2 own a business & employed ppl & i don't believe in f**king up newbies or customers

So thats 3 already mate & yeah keep the change! heehhehehee

sorry, looks like you guys misread the basically sponsored bit.

So Stephen, you say you receive nothing in return for reccomending them continuously, putting their name on almost everything you do and piushing their products while rubbishin other companies products which you haven't tried nor know little about?

Bull sh*t!
I bet you get a sweet discount for it, and if you don't then they are f**cking you.
As for employers/companies in general, well they are there to make money. They have a mark up and are prepared to slash it if need be but usually the dummy off the street pays full price. If you work for someone they make money off you, you don't get paid as much as you make for them do you?
Anyone who is dumb enough to beleive a company is selling a product for little or no profit is not right in the head....
I have worked in all facets of the industry, from design to manufacturing, wholesale to retail and import/export. Would you like some info on the profit margins they all work on or should i stop there.... How about I give out a few wholesale prices on parts or better still, manufaturing costs for a product such as the dump pipes you guys do....
It's business, it's what we do every day to make money/ rip off the consumer as much as we can, it's life and thats just how it works.

My opinion is that both the parties involved will have stretched their version of the truth. Don't believe everything you read on the forums...

geezus you really have a thing for UAS don't you.

what's my agrement with UAS? well the agreement is that i get to play with their workshop for free, i spend around 10 hours a week of mechanic's time developing modifications for the FTO for free. I get more or less free use of the dyno to prove the stuff we develop. What's it cost me? the same as everyone else.

If i wanted to make money from this i would work it completely different i earn enough from my consultancy fee's to pay for my hobbies.

I'll happily show anyone the receipts i have (as i keep them all). You will find that they are the same as what everyone else pays.

At the end of the day i use and recommend UAS cause they're bloody good at what they do. If you don't like them don't use them, but it seems to me that you're really upset over being quote two different prices on a body kit by two different people, and the difference was only $20.00

Call Car mate, see how many different prices you can get in a single day. I've tested this and so far my record is 4.
but usually the dummy off the street pays full price.
first thing you've said that i agree with.

on a side note if you're so experienced in the industry then why are you calling UAS for stuff you should be able to buy from your contacts?

anyway i don't mean to sound rude but this is a pointless conversation and i'm done with it.

i believe there's enough workshop/company-bashing threads in this forum already so let's not start another one eh... this is not going anywhere and to put it bluntly, no you can't keep everyone happy so let's just get over it ok.
