My dad came and we jump started the car. The car would stop unless i kept the revs up, decided to drive it home as it was only 5 minutes away.
After about 3-4minutes of driving i noticed the temperature guage up over half way, i was just around the corner from home and i kept on driving and it would have been about 30 seconds later when i pulled into the drive way i looked at the guage again and the temp needle was off the dial, past H.
I immediatly stopped the car and popped the bonnet, a fair about of steam was coming out of the engine, we could hear bubbling noises, which we assume was the coolant and it was extremly hot as you would imagine. There are no leaks what so ever. We noticed the radiator was only luke warm. I left it with the bonnet up to cool off. We also pulled the dip stick out and felt the temperature of the oil, it was fairly warm but not boiling hot.
Next morning we take the thermostat out and do the boiling water test and it is not functioning correctly, it takes a long time to open and when it opens it is only opening a very small amount.
So it would seem the coolant was circling the engine and not going back into the raditor due to the faulty thermostat. In total i would the say the engine was running for about 5-6minutes. But it would have been in the last 1-2 minutes that the temp went over half way and then into danger zone.
Considering the above circumstances, what are the chances i've done some serious engine damage?
Once i fit the new thermostat should i try and start it?
Can anyone think of a link to my battery suddenly dieing and my thermostat stop working? Or was this just a co-incidence
I really hope the engine is ok
