New fto need opinion

Post by messy »

Hey guys, im just finishing importing my FTO, its a 1998 gx aero. Getting it from the compliance shop soon so i wanted to get some rims etc sorted out - just wanted some opinions.

Its a silver FTO colour A26, i was deciding between fairly thin spokes either in silver or chrome. i was leaning toward chrome but not sure how it'll look.. any opinions would be good

Also, rim size -- i was looking to 17" / 18" or 19" ? What would be the best combo - the suspension is yet to be done, ill do wheels first.

Well for starters

Ok, for starters the SIZE of the wheel would be impossible to get above 18"
as far as i know..

I have 18" on my car, and there is some scrubbing.. but they look hot..
So 17" would probably be the most practical, but they wont fill the gaurds
like 18" will.. as for style of RIM, get whatever YOU like.. i mean i tried to
do something a little bit different, i got deep dish chromies.. i cop some flack
from the guys in the club.. but i also get some praise too..

So in the end you can get something that everyone else has..
or try and be a bit different, its really upto you!! the next set of rims i will
but will be crhome/black im getting the split spokes in black chroem center cap
and chrome ring around the spokes.. thats hot.. haha..

So yeh to round this all up.. the biggest you will fit on the car is 18"
the style is upto you, lower the car after you get your rims.

Hope this helps you out man.. id like to see some pics of the car :D
take it easy and good luck.. maybe post some pics of the wheels your
looking at buying..

You can have 18" rims without scrubbing, just need the right type of tyres
Take a look around on the site and you'll find it, but I'll make it easier for u and just copy past it:

Using these rims with the matching tyre sizes will not cause rubbing against the wheel arches.

Rim Size Tyre Size
15x6" 195x60R15
15x6.5" 205x60R15
16x6.5" 205x50R16
16x7.5" 215x45R16
17x7" 205x40R17
17x7.5" 215x40R17
17x8" 225x40R17
18x8" 215x35R18

take a look on tempetyres and run the wheel wizard, gives u good results for the size of rims for the car

In most Aus states it is illegal to have a wheel diametre 1 inch larger than what came standard on the car - unless you can produce an engineering certificate. V6 FTO's came stock with 16's therefore 17's is legally as big as you can go.

Also keep in mind, insurance companies will not cover your wheels if you prang the car. Their rules are the same as state laws - not more than 1 inch bigger.

Having said that, this is also coming from me who has 18's on the car, but getting pulled over & defected is not really common practice where I live!

I've seen FTO's with 19's & 20's - looks great from the side, but the height of them serverly limits the width that can be acheived. Most of them look like bike wheels from the front / back. Toss up then - rubber on the road for traction or height for bling... your call

I have 18" rims and use 215x35R18 wheels and I had to remove the plastic wheel guard on the inside of the arch to get rid of most of the rubbing. It can still rub at certain angles, god knows how people who have 19"/20" can stand the rubbing it drove me insane.

Well 18 is good, but any bigger wouldn't suit the car at all, since FTO's are for "stubbier" than other cars, any bigger than 18" wouldn't look normal on it
