my water pump is rooted

Post by gus »

I've been losing coolant for a while so i took it into the mechanics today.

Apparently i have a number of problems with the car:

1. Coolant is being lost by the water pump. Mechanic says it is rooted. He says that he may be able to use a water pump from a Mitsubishi Galant as the engines are very similar. (not sure what model i have a 96 GPX tip)

2. Not relating to the coolant - front and rear gearbox mounts need to be replaced as they are giving up.

Ive told him that while he is getting to the pump, to get to the timing belt and get the 100k km service done. The car is at 95k so its better knocking that on the head while they in there fiddling around. The mech reckons ill prolly be up for around $1000 at least depending on parts.

Do you guys know if point 1 is accurate? will the galant pump slot in? im not much for the technical aspects of the car so any advice would be sweet.

The lower front & rear mounts are common to have going, they are about $120 bucks each from mitsi - they are common to a number of models.

Water pump loosing water is also common. Means the seal on the main shaft are gone. Dunno about fitting a Galant one in, but you can certainly get brand new aftermarket brand ones for FTO's from kempys (www.kempys.co.nz) for about $80 bucks. (They are not on the website, you will need to ring them.) Dont get a new pump from mitsi Aus, they will hit you up for over $500.

just for info if anyone has the prob in the future

A newer mitsu galant waterpump is pretty much the same as the fto's so you should be able to use it. cost 8 hours labour though as all sorts of parts had to be pulled out to get into the pump. Damn the biggish engine in a tiny space. Oh well, thats the price you pay for owning a nice car.

The job ended up costing 1500 including a 100k km service

$1000 for some minoy repairs seemed high but $1500 including the 100 000 km service is a good price.

What did the "100k service involve"?

$80 bucks or $600+

Tough decision for a "possibilty" of more power.

Some guy on Fast Fours forum is selling the Electric water pumps for $350 (cheap!).

Don't know how legit it is;

Ahh yes... half the engine does need to come out to get at it as it sits behind the timing belt. Good call on getting the belt & 100k bits done at the same time.
