Noise at engine startup

Post by sublime19 »

Recently as soon as I turn the engine on, I hear this "Krrrrr" noise following by a fast tapping noise, kinda like something's in the way of a fan spinning, but it stops after like 5 seconds or so.
Any ideas? do I just need an oil change?

I have the same problem this morning when I started the car. Could it be the weather? Cold engine maybe?

Well, get in there & listen! Open your bonnet up first thing in the morn, start her up & listen around the engine. If it sounds metallic then get a screw driver handle up against your ear & move the tip around on the engine... you can pin point the noise then

I'll give that a go, hope I can find it in 5 seconds! I don't think it's metallic though, it really sounds like something's in the way of the fan, guess I'll see if i can find out tomorrow morning.

It's interesting how it seems to happen to a lot of other people so I guess it's nothing too major (I hope)

OK now I think I have an answer to this (sort of)

Now I know for a fact there's nothing wrong with the car, cos since it's starting to get warmer, there is no noise at all, but when it's cold in the morning the noise is there.

so now we know WHEN it happens (and its due to the weather), so it means it must be something that makes the noise when it's cold, and since it doesnt do it when it's a warm day and the engine isnt too cold, there's no noise = nothing much to worry about :D

hmm if it is tappets, then it's not too bad, since the noise only comes on for abt 5 seconds or so then goes away, and then doesnt come back again at all

think my fuel filter needs changing now :?
